As he rides through the city, he becomes more and more disconcerted with his place in the world. He's constantly on the watch for an assassin, consulting with his team of bodyguards often. Moreover, he has taken a financial risk by borrowing money in the currency exchange thinking that the JP Yen will lose its value. During the course of the day, the Yen continues to rise, and Eric goes bankrupt.

Don DeLillo’s view in Cosmopolis is very comic and deeply scathing as he reveals how shallow the ultra rich lives really are.
