Fans of highly successful author Don DeLillo will be glad to hear that his recent book entitled Cosmopolis will hit theaters in 2012. Robert Pattinson is slated to play the main role and Sarah Gadon as his estranged wife, while David Cronenberg, director of the Eastern Promises is on board to direct the movie adaptation, and it will be distributed by Entertainment One.
The story follows a day in the life of Eric Packar, a twenty eight year old billionaire, is on his way across New York City in his luxurious limo to get his haircut. His limo is filled with visitors, including his doctor, who examines Packar every day, various financial advisers, his bodyguards and drivers. He also makes numerous stops along the way, to meet with his newly married wife “Elise Shifrin” and to engage in various sexual interlude with lovers. His progress is delayed due to a presidential pageant, later by a disastrous political show, and finally by a funeral.
As he rides through the city, he becomes more and more disconcerted with his place in the world. He's constantly on the watch for an assassin, consulting with his team of bodyguards often. Moreover, he has taken a financial risk by borrowing money in the currency exchange thinking that the JP Yen will lose its value. During the course of the day, the Yen continues to rise, and Eric goes bankrupt.
Don DeLillo’s view in Cosmopolis is very comic and deeply scathing as he reveals how shallow the ultra rich lives really are.
