Funcom, the developer behind the open-world survival game Conan Exiles, has released a new trailer highlighting what players need to survive in its dangerous and unforgiving world. From managing food and water to protecting yourself from extreme environments, survival in Conan Exiles requires constant preparation and smart decision-making.
Environmental hazards play a major role. Sandstorms can quickly overwhelm unprepared players, making proper clothing and shelter essential. Venturing into the wilderness without suitable weapons or armor is risky, as hostile creatures and environmental threats are always present. To progress, players must continually learn new crafting recipes and survival skills to improve their chances of staying alive.
NPC Followers and Base Defense in PvP
Beyond environmental dangers, other players can also pose a serious challenge, especially on PvP servers. In these modes, players may engage in combat with one another, and bases can be attacked when owners are offline. Because of this, base defense becomes a critical part of long-term survival.
NPC followers (often referred to in-game as thralls) play an important role in defending player settlements. These characters can be stationed at your base to help protect structures and crafting areas while you are exploring or gathering resources elsewhere.
Funcom has previously explained that they considered alternative systems, such as NPCs who voluntarily assist the player. However, during early access, the focus remained on recruitable NPC followers as a core gameplay mechanic.
Cooperation Is Key to Survival
Surviving alone in Conan Exiles can be difficult, as the world is filled with constant threats. Exploring unknown regions, ancient ruins, or high-level areas often requires teamwork. Grouping up with other players increases your chances of success and makes dangerous expeditions more manageable.
Working together also allows players to build larger, better-defended settlements. Well-organized communities are far more resilient than isolated structures and provide better protection against both environmental dangers and PvP encounters.
Release Information
Conan Exiles launched in Early Access on January 31, 2017 for PC. Xbox One players gained access later in the spring, while PlayStation 4 users received the game after the full release rather than during early access.
