Solve Dummy Finger Puzzle in Resident Evil 7 demo

With the latest update to the Resident Evil 7 demo, one of its longest-standing mysteries has finally been resolved. The previously unused dummy finger item now plays a key role, and actions completed in the demo can carry over into the full game.

While the exact reward is still unknown, Capcom has confirmed that save data from the demo can be transferred into Resident Evil 7 when it launches on January 24, 2017, making this puzzle worth completing.

Below is a step-by-step guide explaining exactly how to solve the dummy finger puzzle. Every action must be completed in order for the sequence to work correctly.

Step 1. Activate the lever near the fireplace. Go through the hidden passage and pick up the Fuse. Insert it into the electrical panel on the wall.

Step 2. Proceed into the corridor and enter the room with the damaged door. Pick up the Blank Notebook from the small table. This item tracks progress for the puzzle.

Step 3. Go upstairs and activate the switch that unlocks the staircase leading to the attic.

Step 4. Enter the open room in the attic. Collect the key near the bed and inspect the markings on the wall. You will hear a sound cue, which signals the first puzzle trigger.

Step 5. Return to the corridor and use the key to unlock the iron gate.

Step 6. In the basement area, collect the valve from the stretcher. Attempt to exit through the door, complete the on-screen interaction, and leave the area quickly to avoid taking damage.

Step 7. Pick up another key hanging on a decorative figure along the side path. Move carefully and leave the area afterward.

Step 8. Return to the attic bedroom and collect the dummy hand near the wall markings. Then go downstairs and pick up the dummy finger from the nearby table. Combine the two items in your inventory.

Step 9. Using the inspection feature, point the combined dummy hand toward the fallen shelf with bags nearby. A sound confirms the action was successful.

Step 10. Go through the kitchen and continue forward to pick up the bolt cutter. Return and use it to open the chained cabinet, then collect the video tape inside.

Step 11. Head back to the attic, move past the open door, and approach the boarded-up door at the end of the hallway. You will hear another sound cue.

Step 12. Return to the basement and point the dummy hand toward the figure on the stretcher. A confirmation sound indicates success.

Step 13. As you exit the basement, collect the lock pick near the ladder. Use it to unlock the kitchen drawer and obtain the axe.

Step 14. Use the axe on the framed portrait along the staircase. This triggers another sound cue.

Step 15. Enter the room beneath the stairs where decorative figures are suspended. Point the dummy hand at the blocked door until you hear confirmation.

Step 16. Stand in front of the mirror outside the room and perform a quick turn. Another sound confirms progress.

Step 17. Return to the attic and point the dummy hand toward the structure near the bed. A breaking sound confirms the step.

Step 18. Insert the video tape into the TV and watch it until the end. During playback, interact with all accessible objects and allow all dialogue to play naturally.

Step 19. After the tape finishes, return to the basement area where the hanging figure was found. Look for another small figure on the floor and inspect it. If the sound does not trigger, replay the tape and repeat the step.

Step 20. Go back to the kitchen, open the cooking pot, and point the dummy hand at it. The final confirmation sound will play.

Step 21. Return to the attic bedroom and open the previously locked door, now clearly marked. Inside, inspect the rocking chair to obtain the coin, completing the puzzle.

Step 22. Exit the window to end the demo.
