The Equalizer - Denzel to Star in TV to Movie Adaptation

It appears that Paul Haggis who attached to write/direct the adaptation and Russell Crowe who attached to play the lead role when the project was setup at The Weinstein Co. in 2010 are now off the project. According to a recent press release from Sony Pictures, the Oscar winner Denzel Washington is in talk to star the lead role, while Richard Wenk (The Mechanic) is onboard to pen the script and Alex Siskind and Escape Artists will produce the film.

The television series follows the recently retired Secret Agent Robert McCall, who runs a newspaper advertisement and uses his skills and contacts to assist people who don't know where else to go. As a private Agent, he always twists the system to do things the police cannot legally do. On a task to pay back in a particular way for his lifetime of killing for the Agency, he assists those in need, generally for no fee at all.

Update
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rupert Wyatt (Rise ofthe Planet of the Apes) is currently in talks to direct the project.

The Equalizer is scheduled for release sometime in 2013.
