Updated / A Look Back
FIFA 23 has been out for a while now, and with the benefit of hindsight, it's a good time to revisit the age-old question: Standard or Ultimate Edition? This post originally aimed to help players decide before launch, so let's see how things played out.
Originally, we outlined the key differences between the two editions:
Standard Edition:
- Team of the Week 1 Player Item
- Kylian Mbappé Loan Item (5 FUT matches)
- FUT Ambassadors Loan Player Pick (Davies, Son, or Vinicius Jr. for 3 FUT matches)
- Career Mode Homegrown Talent
- Available from September 30th (Launch Day)
Ultimate Edition:
- Pre-Order Bonus (Expired): FIFA World Cup FUT Hero Item (delivered from November 11th)
- 3 Days Early Access (September 27th)
- Dual Entitlement (Play on both current and previous generation consoles within the same console family)
- Ones to Watch Player Item
- 4,600 FIFA Points
- All Standard Edition bonuses
We highlighted that the Ultimate Edition's main draws were early access, dual entitlement, and the Ultimate Team bonuses (especially the pre-order FUT Hero). We suggested that if you only played on one console generation and weren't fussed about the extra FUT content, the Standard Edition was likely sufficient.
Looking Back - Did It Hold Up?
- Early Access: As always, early access proved valuable for dedicated FUT players wanting a head start on the market and squad building. This remains a key selling point for any game with a strong online component.
- Dual Entitlement: This feature was crucial for players transitioning between console generations. If you were planning an upgrade around the FIFA 23 release, the Ultimate Edition saved you from buying the game twice.
- FUT Hero Pre-Order Bonus: This was a significant incentive for many. The value of these Heroes fluctuated throughout the year, but having one from the start (albeit delayed) was a nice boost.
- Ones to Watch and FIFA Points: The Ones to Watch items added excitement to the early FUT season, and the 4,600 FIFA Points provided a decent amount of in-game currency for packs or other items.
- Standard Edition Value: For casual players or those on a tighter budget, the Standard Edition offered a solid FIFA experience without the extra frills.
So, Which Was the "Better" Choice?
It ultimately depended on individual circumstances:
- Ultimate Edition was likely worth it for:
- Hardcore FUT players wanting early access and extra content.
- Players transitioning between console generations.
- Those who highly valued the pre-order FUT Hero.
- Standard Edition was a good choice for:
- Casual players primarily interested in offline modes.
- Players on a budget who didn't prioritize the extra FUT items.
This retrospective helps put the pre-release information into context. While the original advice was sound, looking back allows us to see how the value of each edition played out over time. It's a useful lesson when considering future game purchases and their various editions.
