Elden Ring Tarnished Edition adds seven new weapons to the Lands Between, including weapons inspired by Shadow of the Erdtree, equipment tied to the two new starting classes, and unique weapons obtained through new NPC encounters.
The important part is that you do not need to start a new character to collect most of them. Existing characters can buy or find the new weapons throughout the world. Bandai Namco's official Patch 1.17 notes specifically confirm that the equipment belonging to the new starting classes can also be obtained later from merchants or by finding it in the world.
This guide covers all 7 Tarnished Edition weapons, including their locations, requirements, base stats, skills, practical uses, acquisition routes, and which ones are worth prioritizing.

All 7 New Weapons at a Glance
Bandai Namco officially confirms that the Tarnished Pack adds the two new starting classes, new weapons, two NPC invasion events, and three Spectral Steed customization options. The new starting-class equipment can also be obtained later through merchants or world exploration.
Quick stat snapshot
The most useful way to compare these weapons is by base attack, requirements, scaling and skill, rather than comparing raw damage between completely different weapon classes.
The following figures are base/+0 values:
The Idus Sword, for example, has 124 physical attack, weighs 7.0, and requires 10 Strength and 15 Dexterity.
Important: base attack does not tell you which weapon will ultimately deal the most damage. Upgrade level, affinity, stat investment, weapon moveset and Ash of War scaling all matter.
1. Reverse-Bladed Sword
Location: Roundtable Hold
The Reverse-Bladed Sword is arguably the easiest of the seven new weapons to obtain. You don't need to travel into a dangerous late-game area or defeat a new NPC. Simply travel to Roundtable Hold and purchase it from the Twin Maiden Husks. The weapon costs 1,000 runes.
How to get the Reverse-Bladed Sword
- Travel to Roundtable Hold.
- Find the Twin Maiden Husks.
- Open their shop.
- Purchase the Reverse-Bladed Sword.
Reverse-Bladed Sword stats
- Type: Backhand Blade
- Physical Attack: 115
- Requirements: 9 STR / 11 DEX
- Base Scaling: D STR / D DEX
- Skill: Blind Spot
The weapon is designed around the aggressive, evasive style associated with the Backhand Blade family from Shadow of the Erdtree.
What is the Reverse-Bladed Sword good for?
The main reason to pick this weapon up is mobility and aggressive melee combat. Its Blind Spot skill lets you reposition around an opponent while attacking, making it useful when staying directly in front of an enemy is dangerous.
It is especially appealing for:
- Dexterity-focused builds
- Fast melee play
- Players who like evasive attacks
- Backhand Blade-style combat
- Early experimentation with Shadow of the Erdtree-inspired weapons
Practical use
The big advantage isn't simply damage. It is the ability to attack while changing your position. That makes it particularly useful against enemies with predictable frontal attacks. Instead of rolling backward and completely resetting your position, Blind Spot lets you stay aggressive.
One important long-term consideration is scaling. The Tarnished Edition version is less impressive at maximum Dexterity scaling than the original DLC Backhand Blade, so its biggest advantage is early access, rather than necessarily being the best late-game version of the weapon style.
Verdict
- Best for: Fast, aggressive players.
- Worth getting? Yes. Its accessibility makes it one of the easiest Tarnished Pack weapons to test immediately.
2. Idus Sword
Location: Liurnia of the Lakes
The Idus Sword is the signature weapon of the new Idus Knight starting class. It is a Light Greatsword, giving a new character immediate access to this weapon category.
The weapon is a Standard/Pierce Light Greatsword with Impaling Thrust, 124 physical attack at base, 7.0 weight, and 10 STR / 15 DEX requirements.
Idus Sword stats
- Type: Light Greatsword
- Attack type: Standard/Pierce
- Physical Attack: 124
- Weight: 7.0
- Requirements: 10 STR / 15 DEX
- Base Scaling: D STR / D DEX
- Skill: Impaling Thrust
- FP Cost: 9
- Critical: 100
- Guard Boost: 38
The weapon uses standard upgrade materials rather than Somber Smithing Stones. It also has no innate elemental or status buildup.
How to get the Idus Sword
If you choose Idus Knight during character creation, you start with the weapon. For an existing character, you can find it in Liurnia of the Lakes, near the Liurnia Lake Shore area.
A more precise route is:
- Travel to Liurnia Lake Shore.
- Head northwest from the Site of Grace.
- Follow the rock wall around the area.
- Look for the large tree near the ruins.
- The sword is on a corpse near the tree.
You can loot it without necessarily killing the nearby enemies. The pickup is in the southern Liurnia area northwest of the Liurnia Lake Shore Site of Grace.
What is the Idus Sword good for?
This is one of the most interesting weapons for a new character because it provides a Light Greatsword from the beginning rather than forcing you to wait for later content.
The weapon works particularly well for players who want:
- A lighter greatsword moveset
- A quality-style Strength/Dexterity character
- More reach than a conventional straight sword
- A weapon that remains practical through the early game
The Idus Sword can carry a fresh character through the early and mid-game while keeping the weight and requirements relatively manageable.
Idus Knight vs existing character
You do not need to restart simply to obtain the Idus Sword. The new class is useful if you specifically want to experience the Tarnished Pack from the beginning, but existing characters can obtain the equipment later. Bandai Namco explicitly confirms that the new starting-class equipment can also be purchased or found later.
Verdict
- Best for: Quality/light-greatsword builds.
- Worth getting? Yes, especially on a fresh character.
3. Hefty Scimitar
Location: East Limgrave
The Hefty Scimitar belongs to the new Heavy Knight starting class. It is a Curved Greatsword, giving the Heavy Knight a heavier melee option than the name "Scimitar" might initially suggest. It can also be obtained by an existing character from a Nomadic Merchant north of Fort Haight West.
Hefty Scimitar stats
- Type: Curved Greatsword
- Physical Attack: 135
- Requirements: 13 STR / 11 DEX
- Base Scaling: D STR / D DEX
- Skill: Spinning Slash
- Upgrade type: Standard weapon
How to get the Hefty Scimitar
You can start with it by choosing Heavy Knight.
If you're using an existing character:
- Travel to East Limgrave.
- Reach the Fort Haight West Site of Grace.
- Head north toward the nearby woods.
- Find the Nomadic Merchant near the campfire.
- Purchase the Hefty Scimitar.
The weapon costs 2,400 runes.
What is the Hefty Scimitar good for?
The weapon is aimed at players who want a heavier curved-weapon option without waiting deep into the game.
It fits naturally into:
- Strength/Dexterity builds
- Early melee characters
- Heavy Knight playthroughs
- Players who want wide curved-greatsword attacks
- Jump-attack and charged-heavy play
It is not necessarily the weapon you should immediately replace your endgame setup with. Its biggest advantages are early accessibility, solid base damage and flexibility.
Practical use
The Heavy Knight itself is more about its starting package than creating a completely new endgame archetype. The Hefty Scimitar gives the class a strong early-game melee option, while existing characters can simply purchase the weapon and experiment with it without rerolling.
Its split Strength/Dexterity scaling means it is especially useful while you're still developing a physical melee build, although more specialized weapons can eventually overtake it as your stats and upgrade level rise.
Verdict
- Best for: Early STR/DEX curved-greatsword builds.
- Worth getting? Yes, particularly if you're experimenting with the Heavy Knight.
4. Reed Great Katana
Location: Dragonbarrow, north of Fort Faroth
The Reed Great Katana is one of the most attractive additions for players who want to experiment with the Great Katana weapon type much earlier. The weapon can be collected directly from the world rather than being locked behind a boss. It is located on a corpse on the large mound/skull north of Fort Faroth in Caelid.
Reed Great Katana stats
- Type: Great Katana
- Damage type: Slash/Pierce
- Physical Attack: 158
- Weight: 10.0
- Requirements: 11 STR / 16 DEX
- Base Scaling: D STR / D DEX
- Skill: Overhead Stance
- Bleed: 55
- Critical: 100
- Guard Boost: 33
The weapon has native 55 Blood Loss buildup, making it particularly interesting for Dexterity/Bleed builds.
How to get the Reed Great Katana
- Travel to Fort Faroth in Caelid.
- Rest at the Fort Faroth Site of Grace.
- Head northwest toward the enormous dragon skull.
- Ride up the skull with Torrent.
- Search the top area.
- Loot the corpse containing the Reed Great Katana.
The weapon is positioned on the large mound north of Fort Faroth, making it accessible without defeating a boss.
What is the Reed Great Katana good for?
This is arguably one of the biggest reasons to explore the Tarnished Pack early. Great Katanas were associated with Shadow of the Erdtree, so putting one into the base-game journey changes the available build options considerably.
It is particularly interesting for:
- Katana players
- Dexterity builds
- Bleed-oriented setups
- Players starting a new playthrough
- Players who want to experiment with Great Katana combat before entering the DLC
Why it is worth grabbing early
You don't need to finish the base game or enter the Realm of Shadow to experiment with this weapon category. The weapon can be reached by riding into Dragonbarrow, making it one of the most valuable early exploration pickups in the Tarnished Pack.
Overhead Stance
The Reed Great Katana comes with Overhead Stance, giving the weapon its distinctive Great Katana combat style. That gives the weapon an immediately recognizable identity: Great Katana reach + Bleed + Overhead Stance + early base-game access
Verdict
- Best for: Katana/Dexterity/Bleed players.
- Worth getting? Absolutely. For a fresh playthrough, this is one of the first weapons I'd prioritize.
5. Ritual Thrusting Shield
Location: Caelid Colosseum
The Ritual Thrusting Shield is probably the most unusual weapon in the Tarnished Edition lineup. It isn't simply a conventional shield. It lets you combine defense with offensive attacks, creating a playstyle very different from standard sword-and-board combat.
Ritual Thrusting Shield stats
- Type: Thrusting Shield
- Physical Attack: 125
- Weight: 9.0
- Requirements: 15 STR / 14 DEX
- Base Scaling: D STR / D DEX
- Skill: Shield Strike
- Guard Boost: 58
- Attack type: Standard/Pierce
The Shield Strike skill allows repeated follow-up attacks, making the weapon an offensive-defensive hybrid rather than a conventional passive shield.
How to get the Ritual Thrusting Shield
Getting to it is more complicated than the weapon itself. You need to approach the Caelid Colosseum through the underground Siofra route.
The practical route is:
- Enter the Siofra River underground area.
- Progress toward the Deep Siofra Well.
- Unlock the required lift using two Stonesword Keys.
- Travel to the Deep Siofra Well Site of Grace.
- Ride toward the Caelid Colosseum.
- Continue toward the giant jar.
- Enter the Colosseum area.
- Search behind the giant jar.
- Loot the corpse containing the Ritual Thrusting Shield.
The shield is located inside the Caelid Colosseum, and the route through Deep Siofra Well is the main challenge involved in reaching it.
What is the Ritual Thrusting Shield good for?
This is the weapon to prioritize if you want to experiment with aggressive defensive combat. Instead of simply blocking attacks and waiting for an opening, you can maintain pressure while using the shield itself as your weapon.
Best use cases
- Shield-focused builds
- Defensive melee characters
- Players who like counterattacks
- Aggressive tank builds
- Players wanting to recreate Shadow of the Erdtree-style thrusting-shield combat earlier
Verdict
- Best for: Defensive/aggressive hybrid builds.
- Worth getting? Yes, especially if you want something genuinely different rather than another conventional sword.
6. Leontiel's Greatsword
Location: Caelid, after defeating Starscourge Radahn
The Leontiel's Greatsword is tied to one of the new NPC invasion encounters. You cannot simply walk up to a chest and collect it. First, you need to defeat Starscourge Radahn.
Leontiel's Greatsword stats
- Type: Greatsword
- Damage type: Standard/Pierce
- Physical Attack: 130
- Weight: 9.5
- Requirements: 13 STR / 26 DEX
- Skill: Muleta
- Base Scaling: E STR / C DEX
- Upgrade type: Unique/Somber
The weapon is a Dexterity-oriented unique Greatsword with Muleta as its defining skill.
How to get Leontiel's Greatsword
- Travel to Caelid.
- Defeat Starscourge Radahn.
- Return to the Starscourge Radahn Site of Grace.
- Summon Torrent.
- Ride north toward the Wailing Dunes and the area near the War-Dead Catacombs.
- Continue toward the relevant ruined structures.
- Knight Leontiel will invade.
- Defeat Leontiel.
- The Greatsword and Leontiel's armor are awarded.
The invasion takes place north of Radahn's arena after Radahn has been defeated.
What makes Leontiel's Greatsword special?
The weapon's defining feature is its Muleta skill. The skill uses the red cloth seen during the invasion and lets you evade incoming attacks before following up offensively.
That makes the weapon especially interesting for players who enjoy:
- Timing-based combat
- Counterattacks
- Dodging through enemy attacks
- Aggressive Greatsword play
- Duel-style fights
Practical combat use
Rather than treating Muleta as a normal damage skill, think of it as a combat invitation: Bait → evade → counter → continue pressure
The skill can be followed by light or heavy attacks, with different follow-ups producing different results. The charged-heavy follow-up is particularly useful when you want to pressure enemy stance.
Verdict
- Best for: Reactive Dexterity melee players.
- Worth getting? Definitely. It is one of the most mechanically distinctive weapons in the pack.
7. Golden Order Flail
Location: Leyndell, Royal Capital
The Golden Order Flail is connected to the second new NPC invasion. This one is potentially missable because the required encounter takes place in Leyndell, Royal Capital and will not occur after the city becomes Leyndell, Ashen Capital.
Bandai Namco's official Patch 1.17 notes explicitly confirm that the new Leyndell invasion will not occur after the area changes to Ashen Capital.
Golden Order Flail stats
- Type: Flail
- Physical Attack: 75
- Holy Attack: 92
- Requirements: 9 STR / 16 DEX / 26 FAI
- Base Scaling: E STR / E DEX / C FAI
- Skill: Causality Wraith
- Upgrade type: Unique/Somber
How to get the Golden Order Flail
You need to reach the relevant statue area in Leyndell.
The route is:
- Enter Leyndell, Royal Capital.
- Reach the Erdtree Sanctuary area.
- Obtain the Golden Order Principia.
- Give the prayer book to the appropriate trainer.
- Learn Law of Regression.
- Reach the statue near the Erdtree Sanctuary.
- Cast Law of Regression in front of the statue.
- The statue changes.
- The Noble Broken Mask invasion is triggered.
- Defeat the invader.
- Collect the Golden Order Flail and associated Golden Order-themed armor.
If you've already progressed through the relevant Goldmask questline, the invasion can be triggered through that progression instead.
Law of Regression requirement
Law of Regression requires 37 Intelligence. If you do not naturally meet the requirement, you can temporarily increase Intelligence through equipment or other stat boosts rather than permanently rebuilding your character.
The important point for this guide is that the Golden Order Flail itself requires Faith, while the acquisition route requires access to Law of Regression.
What is the Golden Order Flail good for?
The weapon's standout mechanic is its Causality Wraith skill, which uses incoming damage to charge a counterattack.
It's worth considering if you enjoy:
- Faith builds
- Risk/reward mechanics
- Counterattacking
- Experimental builds
- Golden Order-themed characters
- PvE encounters where you can predict incoming attacks
Practical use
The weapon becomes more interesting when you treat incoming hits as part of the setup rather than simply something to avoid. That makes a shield particularly useful alongside it. The skill can absorb incoming damage while preparing its response, making it a specialized option for players who enjoy turning defense into offense.
Important warning
Do not leave this weapon until after Leyndell becomes Ashen Capital. Once the transformation happens, the new invasion will not occur. This is the clearest missable weapon in the Tarnished Pack.
Verdict
- Best for: Faith/counterattack and experimental builds.
- Worth getting? Yes, but prioritize it before Leyndell changes.
Best New Weapons for Different Builds
The Tarnished Pack isn't really about replacing every existing top-tier weapon. Its bigger strength is that it gives players earlier access to different combat styles.
- Best for fast melee: Reverse-Bladed Sword — The easy Roundtable Hold purchase makes this the most convenient option for players who want evasive, mobile combat.
- Best Light Greatsword: Idus Sword — If you're starting a new character and want a lighter greatsword-style weapon, this is the obvious choice.
- Best early Great Katana: Reed Great Katana — The ability to collect it near Fort Faroth makes it one of the most interesting early-game additions. Its native Bleed also makes it particularly attractive for Dex/Bleed characters.
- Best defensive/offensive hybrid: Ritual Thrusting Shield — Pick this if you want your shield to become part of your offensive moveset.
- Best reactive weapon: Leontiel's Greatsword — Muleta gives it a distinctly different combat identity, rewarding timing and counterattacks.
- Best Faith-oriented weapon: Golden Order Flail — Its holy damage and Faith requirement make it the most obvious choice for players building around Golden Order/Faith themes.
- Best early Heavy Knight weapon: Hefty Scimitar — Its strong base physical damage and relatively low requirements make it a convenient early curved-greatsword choice, even though its split scaling means a specialized endgame weapon may eventually outperform it.
Do You Need a New Character?
No. This is one of the most important things to understand about the Tarnished Pack. You can create an Idus Knight or Heavy Knight when starting a new character, but their equipment isn't permanently locked to those classes.
Bandai Namco explicitly confirms that the equipment associated with both new starting classes can also be purchased from merchants or found in the Lands Between.
That means you have two good options.
Start a new character if:
- You want to experience the new classes from level one.
- You want to build around the Idus Sword immediately.
- You want the Heavy Knight's starting equipment.
- You're planning a fresh Tarnished Edition playthrough.
- You want the new equipment integrated naturally into your progression.
Keep your existing character if:
- You already have a high-level build.
- You mainly want the seven weapons.
- You don't want to replay the early game.
- You want to collect the equipment quickly.
For most returning players, keeping an existing save is the more efficient choice.
Tarnished Edition Weapon Route
If you're trying to collect everything efficiently, don't simply follow the list from 1 to 7.
Early game
- Reverse-Bladed Sword → Roundtable Hold
- Idus Sword → Liurnia
- Hefty Scimitar → East Limgrave merchant
- Reed Great Katana → Fort Faroth / Dragonbarrow
These can be collected without completing the main game.
Mid game
- Ritual Thrusting Shield → Siofra → Deep Siofra Well → Caelid Colosseum
The main obstacle here is reaching the Colosseum rather than obtaining the weapon itself.
After Radahn
- Leontiel's Greatsword → Defeat Radahn → return to his arena → trigger Leontiel invasion
Before Leyndell becomes Ashen Capital
- Golden Order Flail → Law of Regression → Noble Broken Mask invasion
This route helps prevent the most annoying missable situation: forgetting the Golden Order Flail until after Leyndell has changed.
Tarnished Edition Weapons vs Shadow of the Erdtree
One of the most interesting aspects of the Tarnished Pack is that several of its weapons bring combat ideas associated with Shadow of the Erdtree into the base-game progression.
That changes the value of these items.
- Reed Great Katana gives you an earlier Great Katana option.
- Ritual Thrusting Shield brings an unusual offensive shield concept into the base game.
- Reverse-Bladed Sword provides a Backhand Blade-style option much earlier.
- Idus Sword gives new players a Light Greatsword immediately.
- Leontiel's Greatsword introduces a unique reactive combat skill.
- Golden Order Flail adds another specialized Faith/counterattack option.
So the biggest benefit isn't necessarily raw damage. It's access to different combat styles earlier in a playthrough. That is particularly valuable for players who have already completed Elden Ring and want a reason to start another run without simply repeating the same weapon progression.
The Tarnished Pack also follows a clear design pattern: several of its weapons give players earlier access to weapon styles that were previously associated with later or DLC progression. Some of these early-access versions have weaker high-level scaling than their Shadow of the Erdtree counterparts, so they are best viewed as early and mid-game alternatives rather than automatic endgame replacements.
Patch 1.17 and the Tarnished Pack
Don't confuse the Tarnished Pack DLC with Patch 1.17. Patch 1.17 is the game update that adds support for the Tarnished Pack and also introduces separate balance changes and bug fixes.
Bandai Namco confirms that the Tarnished Pack adds:
- Idus Knight
- Heavy Knight
- New weapons
- Three Spectral Steed Attires
- A new Caelid NPC invasion
- A new Leyndell NPC invasion
The official notes also confirm that the new starting-class equipment can be obtained later through merchants or world exploration.
Patch 1.17 also includes changes outside the Tarnished Pack, including:
- Weapon buffs
- Greatshield adjustments
- Parry improvements
- Sorcery changes
- Incantation buffs
- PvP-specific adjustments
- Great Katana bug fixes
The official patch notes specifically list fixes involving Great Katana critical-hit damage against large enemies and jumping Great Katana attacks being parried.
If you're playing on an existing save, make sure the game has been updated before trying to collect the new content.
FAQ
How many new weapons are in Elden Ring Tarnished Edition?
There are seven new weapon items covered by this guide: Reverse-Bladed Sword, Idus Sword, Hefty Scimitar, Reed Great Katana, Ritual Thrusting Shield, Leontiel's Greatsword, and Golden Order Flail. The official Patch 1.17 notes confirm that new weapons were added but do not themselves state a numerical weapon count. The seven-item list covers the new weapons and thrusting shield associated with the Tarnished Pack.
Do I need to start a new character to get the new weapons?
No. The new starting-class equipment can also be obtained later by purchasing it from merchants or finding it in the world.
What is the easiest new weapon to get?
The Reverse-Bladed Sword is arguably the easiest because it can be purchased directly from the Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold for 1,000 runes.
Which new weapon should I get first?
For most players, the Reverse-Bladed Sword is the easiest first pickup. If you want a Great Katana, however, the Reed Great Katana is one of the most attractive early-game targets because it can be reached in Dragonbarrow without defeating a boss.
Where is the Reed Great Katana?
It is located on a corpse on the large mound/dragon skull north of Fort Faroth in Dragonbarrow, near Greyoll.
Where is the Idus Sword?
The Idus Sword is found in Liurnia of the Lakes, near the Liurnia Lake Shore area, on a corpse near a tree northwest of the Site of Grace.
Where do I buy the Hefty Scimitar?
The Hefty Scimitar can be purchased from the Nomadic Merchant north of Fort Haight West in East Limgrave for 2,400 runes.
How do I get the Ritual Thrusting Shield?
Travel through Siofra River to Deep Siofra Well, then reach the Caelid Colosseum. The shield is located inside the Colosseum on a corpse.
How do I get Leontiel's Greatsword?
Defeat Starscourge Radahn, return to his arena, and ride north into the Wailing Dunes to trigger the Knight Leontiel invasion. Defeat Leontiel to receive the Greatsword and associated armor.
Is the Golden Order Flail missable?
Yes. The Noble Broken Mask invasion is tied to Leyndell, Royal Capital and cannot occur after the area becomes Leyndell, Ashen Capital. Bandai Namco explicitly confirms this in Patch 1.17.
What are the Golden Order Flail requirements?
The weapon requires 9 Strength, 16 Dexterity and 26 Faith. Its base attack is 75 physical + 92 holy.
Which new weapon is best?
There isn't one universal winner. Reverse-Bladed Sword — fast, evasive melee; Idus Sword — Light Greatsword/quality-style builds; Hefty Scimitar — early STR/DEX curved-greatsword play; Reed Great Katana — Dex/Bleed and Great Katana builds; Ritual Thrusting Shield — offensive defensive play; Leontiel's Greatsword — reactive Dexterity combat; Golden Order Flail — Faith/counterattack builds. The Reed Great Katana is probably the strongest recommendation for a fresh playthrough simply because of how early you can obtain a Great Katana with native Bleed. The Reverse-Bladed Sword is the easiest immediate pickup, while Leontiel's Greatsword has one of the most distinctive skills.
Final Verdict
The seven new Tarnished Edition weapons are less about introducing seven universally superior replacements and more about opening up new build options earlier in Elden Ring.
If you're starting a fresh character, the Idus Sword, Hefty Scimitar, and Reed Great Katana are particularly interesting because they can influence your early build from the beginning.
For an existing character, start with the Reverse-Bladed Sword, then pick up the Reed Great Katana and Ritual Thrusting Shield before moving on to the Radahn- and Leyndell-gated weapons.
If you're building around Faith, don't overlook the Golden Order Flail. Its acquisition requirements are more complicated, but its unique counterattack mechanic gives it a purpose beyond simply being another flail.
And if you're planning to collect everything, don't forget the Golden Order Flail before Leyndell becomes Ashen Capital.
The Tarnished Pack is small, but its biggest strength is that it makes several distinctive combat styles available much earlier in the Lands Between. For returning players, that may be the most valuable part of the entire update: you can keep your existing character, grab new weapons without replaying the opening hours, and still make a familiar Elden Ring run feel substantially different.
