How to Unlock Proxima
You can unlock Proxima very early in the game by traveling from Marrow Keep toward Widow's Overlook, then continuing toward Blackridge Pass.
Proxima is found inside a Shattered Beacon near Blackridge Pass. The route doesn't require a long late-game quest chain, making her one of the more accessible optional Shells to obtain early.
Quick Proxima Unlock Route
- Start at Marrow Keep.
- Travel toward Widow's Overlook.
- Continue toward Blackridge Pass.
- Activate the relevant Beacons as you progress.
- Reach the Blackridge Pass Beacon.
- Look for the nearby Shattered Beacon.
- Enter the Shattered Beacon.
- Interact with Proxima.
- Complete the memory sequence.
- Return to the Shell selection system.
- Equip Proxima.
You can make this trip relatively early if you specifically want to build around her abilities.
Where to Find Proxima
Proxima's Location
- Region: Fainweald
- Area: Blackridge Pass
- Location: Shattered Beacon near Blackridge Pass
The important landmark is the Shattered Beacon, rather than a traditional dungeon entrance.
Once you reach the location, interact with Proxima and complete the memory sequence required to unlock her. Current coverage places her directly off the early route from Marrow Keep.
Can You Get Proxima Early?
Yes. This is one of Proxima's biggest advantages. You don't need to finish the main story or reach the late-game areas before experimenting with her. If you like ranged combat, crowd control or hybrid builds, it's worth making the trip early.
How Proxima's Abilities Work
Proxima's identity revolves around Biosampler and Grafted Armor.
Biosampler gives her control over enemy positioning, while Grafted Armor provides a chance to reduce incoming damage. Together, they create a Shell that rewards active positioning rather than simply absorbing hits.
Biosampler
Biosampler is Proxima's signature ability. It fires a hook that can:
- Pull movable enemies toward Proxima
- Pull Proxima toward larger or immovable targets
- Follow the pull with an attack
- Apply Lightning
- Build additional elemental pressure
- Gain stronger crowd-control effects through upgrades
The important part is that Biosampler isn't simply another damage button. It changes where the fight takes place. That allows you to:
- Separate enemies from groups
- Pull targets into melee range
- Close gaps
- Reposition yourself
- Control groups
- Start encounters on your terms
Current ability information describes Biosampler as a hook that pulls movable targets toward Proxima or moves Proxima toward larger targets, with its follow-up attack applying Lightning and damage-over-time pressure. Later upgrades add additional Lightning, knockback, Stasis and increased damage against affected enemies.
The Proxima Combat Loop
Position → Biosampler → Lightning/Control → Attack → Reposition
Once upgraded, Biosampler can become the center of your entire build.
Proxima's Grafted Armor
Proxima's second major ability is Grafted Armor.
It gives her a 15% chance to mitigate incoming melee or ranged damage. When the effect activates, the incoming hit deals 50% less damage, and the hit cannot stagger Proxima.
That makes Grafted Armor useful when you're caught by an attack while maintaining pressure. However, there's an important limitation: It is chance-based.
Don't play Proxima as if she were an invulnerable tank. Her primary defense is still positioning and controlling the engagement.
What Grafted Armor Is Good For
- Survive occasional mistakes
- Reduce incoming damage
- Avoid being staggered by mitigated hits
- Continue attacking through some situations
- Add another defensive layer to aggressive builds
But you shouldn't deliberately trade hits because you expect the 15% chance to activate.
Best Proxima Build
Proxima works best when you build around Biosampler, Lightning, positioning and melee follow-up rather than trying to turn her into a conventional tank.
Recommended Proxima Setup
- Shell: Proxima
- Playstyle: Aggressive melee / Lightning hybrid
- Primary ability: Biosampler
- Weapon: Axatana/Axekatana is an excellent aggressive option
- Sidearm: Crossbow or another useful ranged option
- Seal: Match it to your preferred defensive mechanic
- Tarstones: Critical, melee damage and Lightning-focused effects
Best Proxima Build: Quick Answer
For an aggressive Proxima build, use the Axatana/Axekatana with Lightning Infusion, Critical Chance, Critical Damage and melee-damage effects. Upgrade Biosampler toward Lightning, Shock and Stasis, then use Biosampler to control enemy positioning before following with melee attacks.
The Axatana is particularly well suited to this approach because its katana form encourages rapid attacks, while its axe form gives you a heavier option when you need more impact. Current coverage also identifies Duality Stone as a compatible Combat Tarstone for the Axatana and Axe & Dagger.
Best Proxima Build by Playstyle
You don't have to use Proxima as a pure Lightning build. Her kit supports several approaches.
⚔️ Aggressive Melee Proxima
Best for: Players who want to stay close and maintain pressure.
Prioritize: Axatana/Axekatana, Critical Chance, Critical Damage, Melee damage, Lightning Infusion, Biosampler upgrades.
A community-tested setup uses Auspicious Stone for critical chance, Headsman's Stone for critical damage, Berserker Stone for low-health melee damage and Voltaic Crown for Lightning Infusion.
The basic loop is: Biosampler → close distance → melee combo → Lightning/Shock → reposition. The Axatana works particularly well here because you can use its fast katana attacks for sustained pressure and switch to its axe form when heavier attacks are more appropriate.
⚡ Lightning Proxima
Best for: Crowd control and repeated Biosampler use.
Prioritize: Lightning Infusion, Shock, Stasis, Biosampler upgrades, Resolve management, Damage against affected enemies.
This is where Proxima becomes particularly interesting against groups. Later Biosampler upgrades can add Additional Lightning, Knockback, Stasis, and Increased damage against affected enemies. Current Shell analysis specifically identifies Lightning and Stasis as major parts of Proxima's late progression.
🏹 Hybrid Proxima
Best for: Players who want ranged and melee options.
Use: A versatile melee weapon, Crossbow or another useful sidearm, Biosampler, Moderate Lightning investment, Defensive Tarstone, Flexible Seal.
The idea is to pressure enemies from range when necessary, then use Biosampler to determine when the fight moves into melee distance. This is arguably the most forgiving way to learn Proxima.
🛡️ Beginner Proxima
If you're new to Proxima, don't immediately chase maximum damage. Start with: Upgrade Biosampler, Upgrade your primary weapon, Add one useful Lightning effect, Add critical or general damage, Keep one defensive option, Learn Biosampler positioning, Specialize once you understand the Shell. This avoids spending valuable resources on a build you haven't learned yet.
Proxima Upgrade Priority
Your first upgrades should reinforce what makes Proxima different from other Shells.
Early Game
- Upgrade Biosampler – Biosampler is the centerpiece of Proxima's kit. Improving it gives you value across normal enemies, groups, elites, exploration, and larger targets.
- Upgrade Your Main Weapon – Don't put everything into Shell upgrades while leaving your weapon behind. A stronger weapon gives immediate damage improvements, while Proxima's abilities are most effective when they create openings for your weapon to exploit.
- Add Lightning Synergy – Once you have access to the appropriate Tarstones, begin building around Lightning. This is where Proxima's offensive identity starts becoming much clearer.
Mid-Game Proxima Upgrades
Once the basic build is established, prioritize Biosampler upgrades that improve: Lightning, Shock, Stasis, Crowd control, Damage against affected enemies. These upgrades turn Biosampler from a simple mobility tool into a more complete combat system.
Late-Game Proxima Upgrades
At this point, specialize instead of spreading resources across everything.
- Aggressive Proxima: Lightning → Critical → Melee Damage → Biosampler
- Control Proxima: Biosampler → Stasis → Lightning → Crowd Control
- Safer Proxima: Biosampler → Survivability → Weapon Damage → Lightning
Best Weapons for Proxima
There isn't a mandatory Proxima weapon. Her ability to control positioning means several weapon types can work.
Axatana – The Axatana is one of the strongest candidates for an aggressive Proxima build. Its two configurations give you fast katana attacks and heavy axe attacks, with flexible engagement options. The katana form is especially useful for rapid light-attack pressure, while the axe form gives you a heavier alternative.
Axatana + Duality Stone – Duality Stone is a Combat Tarstone compatible with the Axatana and Axe & Dagger. Its defining effect causes eligible light attack combos to strike twice. That makes it particularly interesting for Proxima builds that stay aggressive and repeatedly use fast melee strings.
Axatana + Lightning – For a more specialized setup, combine the Axatana with Lightning-oriented effects. This creates a strong loop: Biosampler → Lightning → fast melee attacks → Shock → reposition.
Best Sidearms for Proxima
Proxima naturally benefits from having a useful ranged option available.
The Crossbow is a particularly practical choice for a hybrid or melee-focused setup because it gives you a ranged option without requiring you to abandon your primary weapon strategy.
Use the sidearm to: Pressure distant targets, Deal with awkward enemies, Create openings, Avoid unnecessary approaches, Finish weakened enemies.
Don't let the sidearm replace Biosampler. The strength of Proxima is switching between ranged pressure, positioning and melee punishment.
Best Seals for Proxima
Your Seal determines which defensive mechanic you have access to, so choose it according to your experience and preferred combat rhythm.
The four Seals covered in our separate guide are: Untarnished Seal, Vatra's Seal, Infinite Seal, and Slayer Seal.
Vatra's Seal – Useful if you prefer Harden as your defensive tool. This can give you a safety window when committing to an attack.
Infinite Seal – A stronger choice for players comfortable with Perfect Guard timing. It rewards precision rather than passive defense.
Slayer Seal – Slayer Seal is attractive for aggressive ranged/Riposte play. However: Equipping Slayer Seal disables achievements on that save file. If you're working toward achievement completion, avoid equipping it on that save.
For the complete Seal mechanics and locations, see: Mortal Shell 2 Seals Guide: All Locations, Guard, Harden, Parry & Slayer
Best Tarstones for Proxima
Proxima benefits considerably from a focused Tarstone loadout. Don't simply equip the highest-numbered stones you have. Choose them around your intended playstyle.
Best Offensive Setup
A strong direction is:
- Auspicious Stone — Critical Chance
- Headsman's Stone — Critical Damage
- Berserker Stone — Low-health melee damage
- Voltaic Crown — Lightning Infusion
Current boss/build coverage also highlights these offensive Tarstone categories for high-damage melee setups.
Why This Works – The setup creates several layers of pressure: Critical hits → stronger melee damage → Lightning effects. That works particularly well when Biosampler creates the opening for your melee combo.
Best Lightning Setup
For a Lightning-focused Proxima, prioritize: Lightning Infusion, Shock, Biosampler synergy, Stasis, Critical damage, General damage. The important thing is to make your Tarstones work together rather than simply stacking unrelated bonuses.
Tarstone Slot Reminder
Tarstones aren't a completely unrestricted collection of bonuses. Current coverage describes a 10-slot loadout consisting of: 4 Support, 2 Combat, 2 Infusion, 2 Ability. That means your final Proxima build has to make choices rather than simply equipping every useful effect. This is another reason to build around a specific goal.
How to Play Proxima
The biggest mistake is treating Proxima like a normal melee Shell. Her greatest advantage is control over positioning.
- Start Fights on Your Terms – Don't immediately run into a group. Identify the enemy you want to isolate and use Biosampler to change the engagement.
- Use Biosampler for Movement – Don't think of Biosampler as just another damage attack. Its positioning utility can be more important than its initial damage. Use it to pull enemies, close gaps, reposition, separate targets, and set up attacks.
- Don't Rely on Grafted Armor – The 15% mitigation chance is useful, but it isn't a replacement for defense. If you're repeatedly trading hits because you expect Grafted Armor to activate, you're playing against Proxima's strengths.
- Exploit Lightning Against Groups – Proxima becomes particularly interesting when several enemies are close together. A useful pattern is: Pull → Lightning → control → melee → reposition. Later upgrades make this loop substantially stronger through Shock, Stasis and additional Lightning effects.
- Keep Changing Distance – Proxima works best when you're comfortable switching between long range, mid range, melee, and disengage. Don't lock yourself into a single combat distance.
- Let Biosampler Create the Opening – Biosampler shouldn't replace your weapon. Think of it as the tool that creates the opening for your weapon to finish the enemy.
Proxima Against Bosses
Proxima can work against bosses, but her strengths change when you're fighting a single target.
Her advantages: Positioning tools, Gap closing, Ranged flexibility, Lightning pressure, Stasis potential, Damage mitigation.
Her weaknesses: Grafted Armor is chance-based, Crowd control is less valuable against isolated targets, Some bosses leave fewer opportunities for Biosampler positioning, Other Shells can offer stronger single-target finishing.
Current Shell comparisons specifically point to Proxima's Lightning/Stasis crowd control as a major strength while identifying weaker single-target finishing as one of her limitations.
So don't judge Proxima purely by how quickly she deletes a boss. Her strength is controlling the fight.
Is Proxima Good for Beginners?
Yes, especially if you enjoy flexible combat.
Recent player discussion and Shell comparisons both highlight Proxima as an accessible early option, although players disagree about how strong she is relative to the other Shells.
She gives beginners access to: Positioning, Crowd control, Ranged support, Melee combat, Lightning, Defensive mitigation. However, she isn't completely passive. You still need to learn when to use Biosampler and when to disengage.
Choose Proxima if you like: Ranged combat, Hybrid builds, Lightning, Crowd control, Mobility, Aggressive positioning, Switching between ranged and melee attacks.
Consider another Shell if you prefer: Maximum durability, Straightforward melee, Pure dodge-based combat, Simple defensive play.
Proxima Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths: Excellent positioning, Strong Lightning synergy, Powerful crowd-control potential, Biosampler scales with investment, Works with aggressive melee weapons, Can combine ranged and melee combat, Useful against groups, Grafted Armor provides damage mitigation, Available relatively early.
Weaknesses: Grafted Armor is chance-based, Requires active positioning, Less straightforward than a dedicated tank, Some strongest synergies require investment, Single-target encounters reduce the value of some crowd-control effects, Requires more active ability management than simpler Shells.
Common Proxima Mistakes
- Mistake 1: Treating Proxima Like a Tank – Grafted Armor doesn't mean you should stand in every attack.
- Mistake 2: Using Biosampler Only for Damage – Its positioning utility is one of its most important advantages.
- Mistake 3: Staying at One Range – Proxima's strength comes from moving between ranged and melee combat.
- Mistake 4: Ignoring Lightning – Lightning is one of the strongest ways to build around her Biosampler-focused kit.
- Mistake 5: Spending Tarstones Randomly – Build around a specific objective instead of increasing every stat you can.
- Mistake 6: Using Slayer Seal on an Achievement Save – Slayer Seal disables achievements on that save.
- Mistake 7: Upgrading Everything at Once – Build around Biosampler and your main weapon first. Once those are established, specialize your Tarstones and secondary upgrades.
Proxima vs Other Shells
- If you want positioning, Lightning and crowd control: Proxima
- If you want fast aggressive combat: Tiel
- If you want heavy melee and durability: Eredrim
- If you want balanced early combat: Harros
- If you want clone/summon-based combat: Genessa
- If you want specialized late-game mechanics: Other advanced Shells
This isn't a definitive tier list. Your weapon, Tarstones, Seal and Shell upgrades can substantially change how a Shell performs. Use the separate Mortal Shell 2 Shells Tier List for the broader comparison rather than turning this guide into another ranking article.

Final Proxima Build Recommendation
If you're unlocking Proxima early, don't overcomplicate the build.
Start with: Proxima + strong melee weapon + ranged sidearm + Lightning-focused Tarstones + a Seal that matches your defensive skill. Then build around Biosampler.
For an aggressive setup, the Axatana/Axekatana is an especially good pairing because its fast katana form complements rapid melee pressure while its axe form gives you a heavier option.
The key isn't simply dealing more damage. It's using Biosampler to decide: Which enemy you fight → where you fight it → when you commit → when you disengage.
Once you understand that loop, Proxima becomes much more than a ranged Shell. She becomes a flexible position-control fighter capable of combining ranged pressure, melee attacks, Lightning, Shock and Stasis.
