If you've reached Laboratory X16 in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope, don't choose Mavka or Zulu immediately. This is the single most important point in the DLC for completionists because several missions, unique weapons, and faction rewards become exclusive once the real Duty vs Freedom decision is made.
The good news is that not every Mavka/Zulu choice is permanent. Cost of Hope actually contains two separate X16 decisions, and understanding the difference lets you experience both routes with only two manual saves.

The Two X16 Choices Explained
This is where many players get confused.
During The Destructive Power of the Mind, you'll make two different decisions involving Mavka and Zulu. Only one of them permanently determines your faction.
Choice #1 — X16 assault route: Choose whether Mavka or Zulu leads the assault into the laboratory.
- Changes: Route through X16, Early unique weapon
- Not the ending: ❌
Choice #2 — Mutant standoff: Later inside X16, Mavka and Zulu argue over the mutant. This is the permanent Duty vs Freedom decision.
The key takeaway: choosing Mavka's assault route does not automatically lock the Freedom ending, and choosing Zulu's assault does not automatically lock Duty. The permanent branch happens later during the standoff.
Where Is the Real Point of No Return?
The actual faction lock occurs during The Destructive Power of the Mind after progressing through Laboratory X16.
Point of No Return: Make a manual save immediately before Mavka and Zulu argue over the mutant. This single save lets you replay both endings without replaying the earlier DLC.
The dialogue that decides the ending:

Everything You Can Miss (Quick Reference)
Here's the fastest way to see what becomes exclusive after the permanent faction decision.
Most of the DLC's story is shared, but 11 main missions are common while each faction has exclusive missions before both routes converge again later.
Duty Route Missables
If you permanently side with Zulu, these are the rewards you'll keep—and what you'll lose from Freedom.
Duty-exclusive missions:
- In the Memory of the Fallen
- Gunpowder, Sweat, and Blood
These missions won't appear on a Freedom save after the X16 decision.
Duty-exclusive weapons:
- Mriya — Duty-exclusive route reward
- Stranger's Rifle — Earned during Territorial War after the Duty ending
Don't confuse Stranger's Rifle with the ending itself—it's awarded later during Territorial War, not immediately after the finale.
Freedom Route Missables
Choosing Mavka unlocks a slightly longer story route and several unique weapons.
Freedom-exclusive missions:
- Status Quo
- Dangerous Way
- Uninvited Guests
Freedom includes one additional main mission before both routes reconnect later in the DLC.
Freedom-exclusive weapons:
- Guardian — Freedom route reward
- Freedom's Bounty — Territorial War reward after the Freedom ending
- Leichtfuchs — One of the easiest weapons to permanently miss
⚠️ Don't leave Myklukha behind: During Status Quo, you'll fight Myklukha in the Arena. Loot his body before leaving to obtain Leichtfuchs. Many players leave the area after the fight and permanently miss this unique weapon.
Unique Weapons to Collect Before Choosing
Not every missable weapon is tied to the permanent faction decision. Here's the complete breakdown.
X16 assault rewards (Choice #1): These depend on who leads the laboratory assault, not your ending.
This is why Save #1 is useful—you can replay the assault and obtain the opposite weapon on another save.
Permanent faction rewards (Choice #2):
Quest missables (Either route): These should be collected regardless of faction: Justice, Rifled Barrel, Maximum, Luftgarde.
What's NOT Missable?
This is just as important as knowing what you'll lose. Many players assume the faction split locks the DLC's biggest side quest—but it doesn't.
The Forgotten still happens: The quest starts through different NPCs depending on your faction, but it remains available on both routes. That means you can still obtain Flare Time and Flare Light regardless of whether you side with Duty or Freedom.

Best Two-Save Strategy (100% Collector Method)
If your goal is experiencing both routes with minimal replaying, use two manual saves.
Save #1 protects:
- Clapper
- Warszawa
- Both assault routes through X16
Save #2 protects:
- Duty ending
- Freedom ending
- Exclusive missions
- Guardian / Mriya
- Freedom's Bounty / Stranger's Rifle
This is a much better strategy than making a single save before entering Laboratory X16.

FAQ
Is Mavka or Zulu the permanent choice?
Yes—but only during the later mutant standoff. The earlier X16 assault decision does not permanently determine your faction.
Where should I save before Duty vs Freedom?
The best approach is two saves: Before choosing the X16 assault route, and Before the mutant standoff that permanently locks Duty or Freedom.
Can I get both Duty and Freedom endings?
Yes. Reloading your manual save before the standoff lets you experience both routes without replaying the entire expansion.
Is Leichtfuchs missable?
Yes. During Status Quo, loot Myklukha's body after the Arena fight before leaving the area.
Is Warszawa a Duty-exclusive weapon?
No. Warszawa comes from the initial X16 assault choice, not the permanent Duty ending. That's an important distinction.
Do I lose The Forgotten by choosing Duty?
No. The quest remains available on both routes; only its starting NPC changes.
Which faction has more missions?
Freedom has 14 main missions, while Duty has 13. Most of the DLC's story is still shared between both routes.
Community Tips
The biggest mistake returning players make is assuming every Mavka or Zulu dialogue immediately locks the ending. It doesn't.
Remember these three rules:
- The first X16 choice changes the assault route and Clapper/Warszawa.
- The second X16 choice permanently determines Duty vs Freedom.
- The Forgotten, Flare Time, and Flare Light are still available regardless of your faction, so don't rush that quest out of fear of losing it.
With those two manual saves in place, you can experience every major branch of Cost of Hope while preserving a clean completionist playthrough.
