Updated September 15, 2026

Infographic guide for Warcraft III Reforged Chapter 2: Treachery, based on a gameplay screenshot of Garek Bandarion[cite: 1, 3]. It outlines main objectives including recovering 3 cogwheels, deactivating the furnace, and repairing the sewer gate[cite: 3]. It also details the optional Broodmother quest and spotlights the Heroic Slash Level 3 ability[cite: 2, 3].

Quick Answer

Chapter 2: Treachery begins immediately after the fall of Capital City. You control Landen and Garek Bandarion as they escort survivors through the city sewers while the Scourge overruns Lordaeron.

Your biggest progression puzzle is recovering 3 missing cogwheels to repair the sewer gate. Before the finale, you'll also unlock the optional Broodmother quest, then survive a scripted confrontation with Baron Rivendare before escaping the collapsing tunnels.

Chapter 2 Overview

  • Starting area: Capital City Sewers
  • Heroes: Landen & Garek Bandarion
  • Main mission: The Sewers
  • Survival condition: Both heroes must survive until the finale
  • Optional quest: The Broodmother

Unlike Chapter 1's city defense, this mission mixes escort gameplay, environmental puzzles, optional exploration and a dramatic story finale. Keeping civilians alive is just as important as winning fights.

Step 1: Escort Civilians Through the Sewers

The mission opens with Landen organizing the remaining guards while Garek struggles to accept Arthas's betrayal.

Landen: "Civilians in the back. The rest of us will take point."

Your formation matters here. Keep your heroes in front with the three accompanying guards while civilians remain behind the frontline. Most early enemies are weak Scourge infantry, making this a good opportunity to preserve healing items.

Starting inventory

Landen begins with several useful consumables:

  • Book of Retraining
  • Potion of Healing
  • Potion of Mana
  • Alicia's Favor (ring)
  • Speed Boots
  • Scroll item

Avoid using the Book of Retraining immediately unless you're already committed to a different talent build.

Step 2: Lock Civilians Inside the Safe Room

After clearing the opening tunnels, you'll reach a fortified supply chamber.

What to do

  1. Lead civilians into the room.
  2. Wait until everyone enters.
  3. Interact with the gate.
  4. Lock the civilians safely inside.

This temporarily removes the escort pressure and lets Landen explore the dangerous sections ahead with a smaller combat party.

Step 3: Find the Alternate Route

Soon afterward, the main tunnel becomes completely blocked by rubble.

Instead of searching for explosives or attacking the debris, head into the branching sewer passage. This alternate route eventually leads toward the missing gate mechanism and the cultist-controlled district.

A common mistake is repeatedly clicking the blocked tunnel—the game expects you to backtrack and follow the side corridor.

Step 4: Recover the 3 Missing Cogwheels

This is the mission's largest objective.

The sewer gate can't be opened because Cult of the Damned soldiers dismantled its winch and scattered three cogwheels throughout nearby sewer sections.

Where to find all three cogwheels

Cogwheel #1 — Eastern cultist patrol

Defeat the first cultist group guarding the flooded corridor. The cogwheel drops automatically after the fight.

Cogwheel #2 — Furnace approach

Continue toward the heated sewer chambers and eliminate the cultists protecting the second mechanism.

Cogwheel #3 — Lower sewer camp

The final cultist squad holds the last gear near the repair gate. Once collected, return to the winch immediately.

The minimap marks remaining objective locations with green exclamation markers, making this one of the more straightforward collection quests in Forsaken Kingdom.

Where players get stuck

Many players think the broken sewer gate is bugged. It isn't—you must collect all three cogwheels from nearby Cult of the Damned camps before the winch becomes usable. Check the green objective markers on your minimap before returning to the gate.

Repairing the gate

Once all three gears are collected:

  1. Return to the broken gate.
  2. Insert each cogwheel.
  3. Activate the repaired winch.
  4. Open the sewer barrier.

The quest updates automatically and unlocks the next section.

Step 5: Shut Down the Central Furnace

The next major obstacle isn't an enemy—it's the city's ancient furnace.

Landen realizes the underground heat is preventing survivors from passing safely, so you must disable the mechanism before continuing.

How to clear the furnace room

  1. Eliminate nearby Cult of the Damned defenders first.
  2. Keep ranged units behind the doorway.
  3. Use Garek's Valiant Charge to interrupt clustered enemies.
  4. Activate the furnace mechanism after the room is secure.

Once the flames stop, the overheated passage becomes accessible.

Optional Quest: Defeat the Broodmother

Optional reward

Before reaching Rivendare, you'll discover The Broodmother quest inside a spider-infested cavern.

The Broodmother is the only optional quest in Chapter 2. Completing it clears the spider-infested cavern, unlocks extra loot, and finishes the optional objective before the Rivendare finale.

How to start it

Enter the side cavern branching from the main sewer route. Unlike ordinary spider encounters earlier in the mission, this quest receives its own objective and completion reward.

Boss strategy

The Broodmother is dangerous because of web control, not raw damage.

Best strategy:

  • Focus Spiderlings first to reduce pressure.
  • Save Garek's Apprehend for dangerous targets after escaping webs.
  • Use Heroic Slash whenever debuffs are active for bonus damage.
  • Keep Landen slightly ahead to absorb melee attacks.

After defeating the Broodmother, the swarm disperses and the optional quest completes.

Step 6: Escape Baron Rivendare

Despite the quest text mentioning Rivendare, this is not a traditional boss kill.

Your real objective is surviving long enough to evacuate everyone.

Phase 1: Hold the defensive line

Rivendare sends repeated undead waves while civilians prepare to escape.

Priorities:

  • Protect Landen
  • Keep Garek alive
  • Eliminate skeletons before elite units
  • Don't chase Rivendare

Phase 2: The Final Order

After the barrier opens, the mission changes completely.

Your new objective becomes:

Bring Garek to safety. Garek must survive.

Ignore unnecessary enemies and retreat through the tunnel.

Collapse the support pillars

Rivendare pursues Garek through the collapsing sewers.

Rather than fighting him directly, destroy the highlighted support pillars to bring debris crashing into the corridor. This blocks the pursuit and creates enough distance to escape.

It's one of the most cinematic sequences in the entire Prologue campaign.

Landen's Sacrifice Explained

The emotional climax of Chapter 2 belongs to Landen.

As Garek prepares to make a final stand, Landen refuses to let another generation die defending a lost city. He lowers the barrier, orders Garek to escort the civilians to Andorhal, and remains behind to face Rivendare alone.

This moment also marks Garek's transition from loyal lieutenant into the future leader of the campaign.

Final Verdict

Chapter 2: Treachery is one of Forsaken Kingdom's strongest early missions because it blends escort gameplay, environmental puzzles and meaningful character development into a single chapter.

The only progression puzzle that consistently slows players down is the 3-cogwheel gate, while the optional Broodmother encounter is worth completing for both the extra challenge and rewards. The finale isn't about defeating Rivendare—it's about surviving long enough for Garek to carry Lordaeron's hope beyond the burning capital.

Continue the Prologue: Chapter 3 picks up in Siege, where Garek reaches Andorhal and begins rebuilding Lordaeron's defenses.
