Chapter 4 Vengeance Objectives
Chapter 4 begins with Garek and Ilastar approaching the ruins of Stratholme.
Your main quest is:
The Baron
- Find and defeat Baron Rivendare.
- Garek must survive.
- Ilastar must survive.
The mission gives you a much larger force-management problem than a simple hero mission. You can recruit additional units, research upgrades and use Survivor Camps while moving through the ruined city.
You also have an optional objective involving the plague-spreading mushrooms.
The main story objective remains Rivendare, but completing the optional objectives can make the later sections easier.
Enter Stratholme Through the Side Gate
The main entrance is not immediately available.
Ilastar offers to enter through a side gate and raise the portcullises from inside. Once she reaches the elevated section, she remains above Garek's ground forces and can scout ahead while supporting the army.
This creates an important early division of roles:
- Garek leads the ground forces.
- Ilastar operates from the elevated route.
- Ilastar can provide ranged support and healing.
- Your ground army should continue clearing the Scourge below.
Do not wait for Garek to force his way through the main entrance. The side route is the intended way forward.
Once the gate opens, Ilastar can continue scouting from above while Garek moves deeper into Stratholme.
Use the Survivor Camp
After reaching the survivors, you gain access to a Survivor Camp that acts as an important forward recruitment and supply point.
The Survivor Camp increases your available Food Supply and lets you recruit additional units.
Depending on the stage of the mission, you can use it to add units such as:
- Footmen
- Mortar Teams
- Priests
- Sorceresses
Mortar Teams are particularly useful against fortified Scourge positions because of their long-range siege damage.
Priests provide healing and support, while Sorceresses give you additional crowd-control options such as Slow.
You should also keep an eye on your Food Supply. Once you reach the limit, you will need additional Farms before you can continue producing units.
This makes the early part of Vengeance feel much closer to a traditional Warcraft III mission than the more RPG-focused systems introduced elsewhere in Forsaken Kingdom.
For a broader explanation of the new equipment and hero systems, see our Warcraft III Reforged Equipment & Inventory Guide: Gear, Rings, Stash & RPG Stats Explained.
Open the First Gate
As you clear the early Scourge defenses, you will reach Alonsus Chapel and the surrounding defensive structures.
One of the important early threats is the Crypt.
Use your Mortar Teams against defensive structures when possible rather than sending your melee units directly into every position.
After dealing with the defenses, you can activate the first lever.
However, this does not completely solve the gate problem.
If you activate the first lever and find that the main gate remains closed, that is intentional.
You need another lever.
Find the Second Lever
The next objective is to find the second lever.
The mission explicitly points out that the gate is still closed and that another lever must be somewhere nearby.
This is where Ilastar becomes especially important.
Move Ilastar along the elevated battlement route and look for the second lever. Once it is activated, the gate can finally be opened and your forces can regroup.
You also encounter additional human reinforcements during this section, including Riflemen.
This is a good point to invest in Blacksmith upgrades if you have enough resources.
For example, Black Gunpowder improves the ranged attack damage of units including:
- Riflemen
- Mortar Teams
- Siege Engines
- Flying Machines
Keep producing units from your Barracks while managing your Food Supply. Vengeance can quickly become supply-heavy once you begin adding reinforcements.
Defeat Ras After He Becomes a Lich
One of Chapter 4's biggest story moments happens when you encounter Ras Frostwhisper.
Ras begins the sequence as a human spellcaster, but he declares that the Kirin Tor rejected his talent and ambition.
He then embraces undeath and transforms into a Lich.
This is an important distinction because Ras is not simply introduced as an already-existing Lich in this chapter. His transformation happens during the mission.
Once the transformation is complete, you must fight him and his Scourge forces.
How to Handle Ras
Ras is supported by additional undead units, including Necromancers and Meat Wagons.
A useful target priority is:
- Dangerous support units such as Necromancers
- Meat Wagons and other high-damage threats
- Remaining nearby Scourge forces
- Ras
This is a tactical recommendation rather than a required scripted order.
The main goal is to prevent the supporting undead army from overwhelming your frontline while you deal with Ras.
After Ras is defeated, he does not remain dead.
He tells Garek and Ilastar that they will meet again before escaping.
You can then continue toward Rivendare.
How Many Plague Mushrooms Are There in Chapter 4?
There are 3 Giant Plague Mushrooms in Chapter 4 Vengeance.
Destroying them is an optional quest, but it is worth completing if you are already exploring the city.
The objective appears as:
Destroy the Giant Plague Mushrooms — 0 of 3 Destroyed
The mushrooms are surrounded by plague effects, and Ilastar warns that their spores are spreading the Plague of Undeath.
How to Destroy the Plague Mushrooms
Ilastar's Light's Mercy ability can destroy the Giant Plague Mushrooms.
Once you destroy a mushroom, the quest counter increases:
- 1 of 3 Destroyed
- 2 of 3 Destroyed
- 3 of 3 Destroyed
The final mushroom can be found around the Dungeon Gate section of the city.
Once all three are destroyed, the optional Plague Mushrooms quest is completed.
You do not need to find every mushroom before continuing the main story, so you can also return to the objective while progressing through Stratholme.
Reach Crusader Square
As you push farther through Stratholme, you eventually reach another locked route.
This gate requires the Crusader Square Key.
Once you have the key, you can open the route toward Crusader Square and continue toward Rivendare's position.
The streets become increasingly dangerous at this stage, so do not feel obligated to fight every undead group you encounter.
If a group is blocking the required path, clear it. Otherwise, preserving your army can be more valuable than taking unnecessary fights.
You will also encounter stronger Scourge forces and additional named enemies as you approach the later sections.
Deal With Lorthiras and Grimthane
The route toward Rivendare includes several stronger encounters, including Lorthiras and Grimthane.
Lorthiras
Lorthiras can absorb significant pressure from your frontline and has defensive abilities that make direct melee attacks less attractive.
If you have ranged units available, use them to support the fight rather than allowing your entire army to attack him from close range.
Keep Ilastar positioned so she can support the frontline while Garek remains engaged.
Grimthane
Grimthane is a Level 7 Necromancer who can deal significant area damage.
His explosive flame attack makes it particularly important not to clump every unit around the same target.
Use Garek to hold enemy attention while your ranged units and spellcasters attack from a safer position.
The exact enemy order can vary depending on how you approach the area, so focus on keeping your heroes alive rather than following a rigid unit sequence.
Regroup Your Split Army
Later in the mission, Garek discovers that the allied forces have been split.
You will need to find the lever that opens the gate separating the groups.
This section can be confusing because the army is no longer operating as one formation.
The basic solution is:
- Explore the accessible section.
- Find the lever controlling the closed gate.
- Activate it.
- Regroup Garek's forces with the separated troops.
- Continue toward Rivendare.
Once the gate is opened, you can bring the army together again and prepare for the final part of the mission.
Before continuing, make use of any available healing, potions and recruitment opportunities.
You can also use your hero inventory to improve your frontline.
For more information about the game's expanded equipment system, see the Warcraft III Reforged Equipment & Inventory Guide.
Reach Profane Tower
Eventually you reach the Profane Tower, where Baron Rivendare is holding court.
This is the final major section of Chapter 4.
You can still find survivors around the city while progressing toward the tower, so completing civilian rescue opportunities does not necessarily mean stopping the main objective.
Before entering the final encounter, make sure:
- Garek is healthy.
- Ilastar is healthy.
- Your army is regrouped.
- You have enough frontline units.
- Your ranged units are positioned safely.
- You have healing and consumables available.
- You are ready for an encounter with multiple battlefield mechanics.
There is also a Survivor Camp near the final section that can provide additional preparation before the Rivendare fight.
How to Beat Baron Rivendare
Baron Rivendare is the final major boss of Chapter 4.
The fight is not simply a matter of surrounding Rivendare and attacking until his health reaches zero.
The arena contains dangerous area attacks, plague effects and additional objectives.
Red targeting indicators appear across the battlefield to warn you about incoming attacks.
Keep Your Heroes Moving
Do not leave Garek and Ilastar standing in dangerous areas.
When the red warning zones appear, move your units away from them while maintaining enough pressure on Rivendare.
Garek should remain close enough to control the frontline, while Ilastar should provide support from a safer position.
If you are using Garek's Valiant Charge, it can also be useful as an aggressive initiation tool when the situation allows it.
The important part is not to sacrifice Garek simply to keep attacking the boss.
Watch for the Plague
During the fight, Garek and Ilastar become infected by plague spores.
This changes the encounter and adds another reason to pay attention to what is happening around the arena.
Do not tunnel vision on Rivendare's health bar.
The battlefield itself is part of the encounter.
If your units begin taking heavy environmental damage, reposition before continuing your attack.
Destroy the Obelisks
The most important mechanic comes when Rivendare becomes invulnerable.
If you see the message indicating that the target is invulnerable, continuing to attack Rivendare is not the solution.
Instead, Ilastar calls attention to the Obelisks.
Rivendare is protected while the Obelisks remain active.
What to Do During the Invulnerability Phase
Follow this priority:
- Stop focusing your attacks on Rivendare.
- Identify the active Obelisks.
- Move your army toward the Obelisks.
- Destroy them.
- Avoid the red battlefield warning zones.
- Return your focus to Rivendare once the protection is removed.
Rivendare's health bar isn't the objective during the shield phase. The Obelisks are.
This is the biggest mechanic to understand if you are stuck on the final encounter.
Your heroes should remain alive while the army handles the Obelisks, so keep Ilastar supporting Garek instead of exposing her unnecessarily.

Complete The Baron
Once you successfully deal with the Obelisks and finish the final phase of the encounter, the main quest The Baron is completed.
Ilastar uses the Light to restrain Rivendare while Garek finally confronts the Baron over the destruction of Lordaeron and the deaths caused by the Scourge.
The ending also ties back to Garek's earlier desire for glory and battle.
The memories involving Uther and Landen provide additional context for Garek's character and his changing relationship with the idea of survival, duty and glory.
With Rivendare defeated, Chapter 4 comes to an end.
What Happens After Rivendare?
The conclusion of Chapter 4 marks the end of the Last Days of Lordaeron prologue.
Garek and Ilastar's journey through Stratholme closes the four-mission prologue before the story moves into the larger Forsaken Kingdom campaign.
The ending also sets up the transition from the fall of Lordaeron toward the rise of the Forsaken.
If you want the broader story context, see our Warcraft III Reforged Lordaeron's Final Days Explained: How Forsaken Kingdom Rewrites Arthas's Return.
For players continuing into the main campaign, the gameplay structure changes considerably. Blizzard describes the main Forsaken Kingdom campaign as a softer open-world RPG structure inspired by the Rexxar campaign, while the Last Days of Lordaeron remains a four-mission linear prologue.
Chapter 4 Final Tips
Keep these points in mind if you replay Vengeance:

- Use Survivor Camps to reinforce your army.
- Build Farms when you reach the Food Supply limit.
- Use Mortar Teams against defensive structures.
- Research ranged upgrades when you have enough resources.

- Use Ilastar's Light's Mercy to destroy the mushrooms.
- You need the Crusader Square Key to continue through the locked route.
- Avoid unnecessary fights when the streets are packed with undead.
- Keep Garek and Ilastar alive at all times.
- Regroup the split army before pushing toward the final area.
- Prepare your heroes and army before entering the Profane Tower.
- Move away from Rivendare's red warning zones.
- When Rivendare becomes invulnerable, stop attacking him.
- Destroy the Obelisks before returning your focus to Rivendare.
The expanded selection system in Patch 3.0 also allows you to control up to 24 units at once, which can make large army movements easier during the later sections of the mission.
If you are still getting used to the change, our Warcraft III's 24-Unit Control Groups Explained: Does It Change Micro? guide explains what the larger selection limit actually changes during combat.

Final Thoughts
Chapter 4 Vengeance combines the traditional Warcraft III mission structure with several of Forsaken Kingdom's newer systems.
The biggest progression traps are the two-lever gate sequence, the three optional Plague Mushrooms, the Crusader Square Key, the split army, and Rivendare's Obelisk mechanic.
Once you understand those mechanics, the mission becomes much easier to navigate.
