Hytale Chapter 1: How to Unlock The Deepworks (Key & Compressor)

Updated October 13, 2026

In-game screenshot of the Goblin Lab interior showing the broken Compressor station and Boiler with step-by-step diagram overlays for repairing the Compressor, crafting the Deepworks key, and activating the Goblin Gateway in Hytale Chapter 1.

The Deepworks is a major dungeon in Hytale Chapter 1, but reaching it requires more than finding the Forgotten Temple. You must repair the Goblin Lab Compressor, craft the correct Fragment key, and use it at the Goblin Gateway.

This guide explains the unlock sequence, lists the required materials, and covers what to check if the Deepworks key does not appear in your crafting options.

Quick Answer

To unlock The Deepworks in Hytale Chapter 1:

  1. Travel to the Forgotten Temple and enter the Goblin Lab.
  2. Gather the materials needed to repair the Goblin Lab Compressor.
  3. Repair the Compressor to unlock the Deepworks Fragment recipe.
  4. Craft Fragment: Orbis – The Deepworks.
  5. Repair the Goblin Gateway if necessary, then use the key to access the dungeon.

The Compressor, key, and Gateway have separate material requirements. Check the costs below before spending your Scraps, Voidhearts, and Void Crystal Shards.

Materials You Need

These are the reported requirements for the Compressor, Deepworks key, and Gateway. Check the recipes and repair prompts in your current game before spending rare materials, as requirements can change between updates.

Goblin Lab Compressor

  • 75 Scraps
  • 3 Voidhearts
  • 2 Enkindled Sigils
  • 1 Bundled Treasure

Deepworks Key

The recipe for Fragment: Orbis – The Deepworks requires:

  • 30 Scraps
  • 5 Void Crystal Shards
  • 1 Voidheart

Goblin Gateway Repair

  • 4 Void Crystal Shards

The Gateway repair cost is separate from the key recipe. If your Gateway is already repaired, you do not need to pay the repair cost again.

If you need more Void Crystal Shards, see our Hytale Chapter 1: Void Crystal Shards Farming and Breach Time Upgrade Guide before returning to the lab.

1. Find the Goblin Lab

Start at the Forgotten Temple and enter the Goblin Lab. Inspect the machinery to identify which devices still need repairs.

The Compressor is the key progression step for unlocking the Deepworks Fragment recipe. If you have not repaired it, gather its required materials before trying to craft the key.

You can also check your in-game Chapter objectives to keep track of your current progression.

2. Repair the Goblin Lab Compressor

Gather the following materials:

  • 75 Scraps
  • 3 Voidhearts
  • 2 Enkindled Sigils
  • 1 Bundled Treasure

Approach the broken Compressor and interact with it to complete the repair when you have the required materials.

Once the Compressor is working, check the available crafting recipes. The Deepworks Fragment should become available through the appropriate crafting category.

Do not confuse the Compressor with the Goblin Breach Console. The Console extends the time you can spend inside the Breach, while the Compressor is associated with unlocking the Deepworks key recipe.

3. Craft the Deepworks Key

After repairing the Compressor, open the Goblin Tinker's Workbench and look under the Fragments category for Fragment: Orbis – The Deepworks.

The reported recipe requires:

  • 30 Scraps
  • 5 Void Crystal Shards
  • 1 Voidheart

Gather any missing materials and craft the Fragment.

Make sure you select the Deepworks key rather than a Fragment for another destination. Different portal destinations require their corresponding keys.

4. Repair and Use the Goblin Gateway

With the Deepworks key ready, return to the Goblin Gateway in the lab.

If the Gateway is still broken, interact with it and follow its repair prompt. The reported repair cost is 4 Void Crystal Shards.

Once the Gateway is ready:

  1. Interact with the Goblin Gateway.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompt to use a Fragment Key.
  3. Select Fragment: Orbis – The Deepworks.
  4. Complete the interaction to enter the dungeon.

If the Gateway says you need a Fragment Key, check your inventory and confirm that you crafted the Deepworks-specific item. The Gateway repair and key crafting costs are separate, so having enough materials for one does not necessarily cover the other.

5. Prepare Before Entering The Deepworks

The Deepworks is a dungeon with enemy encounters, environmental hazards, puzzles, and major boss fights. Prepare before entering rather than treating it as a quick resource run.

Before starting, check that you have:

  • Crafted the correct Deepworks Fragment.
  • Repaired the Gateway if required.
  • Equipped weapons and combat abilities that suit your playstyle.
  • Brought suitable healing items and other supplies.
  • Completed any nearby preparation you want to do before entering.

Runestones can help you customize your combat approach. Ability Runestones provide abilities, while Modifier Runestones change how those abilities behave. Choose a setup that fits your current equipment and preferred fighting style rather than assuming there is one mandatory build.

For another underground encounter to tackle while collecting resources, see our Hytale Chapter 1: Revenant Guardian Location and Drops guide.

The Deepworks features the Feastmaster encounter and the Gobliterator, a multi-phase boss fight. Be prepared to navigate hazards and handle enemies throughout the dungeon.

Troubleshooting: Why Can't I Unlock The Deepworks?

The Deepworks key recipe is missing

Check whether you have repaired the Goblin Lab Compressor. Then open the Goblin Tinker's Workbench and look in the Fragments category.

I have the materials, but I cannot craft the key

Confirm that you are selecting Fragment: Orbis – The Deepworks and have 30 Scraps, 5 Void Crystal Shards, and 1 Voidheart. Check that the Compressor repair is complete.

The Goblin Gateway asks for a Fragment Key

Make sure you crafted the Deepworks-specific Fragment. A key for another destination will not serve as the Deepworks key.

The Gateway is still broken

Interact with the Gateway and check its repair prompt. Its reported repair cost is 4 Void Crystal Shards, separate from the key's crafting cost.

I am short on Void Crystal Shards

Gather more shards in the Goblin Breach before attempting the unlock again. The Void Crystal Shards farming guide explains how to collect them and extend your time in the Breach.
