Phantom Blade Zero Missable Quests: Boss Cutoffs & Checklist

Updated October 30, 2026

Phantom Blade Zero missable quests infographic showing Jing Ye, Bai Chilian, and Mirage Estate boss cutoffs, Apprentice Healer herbs, and the Weeping Creek Valley quest checklist.

Some side quests in Phantom Blade Zero can permanently fail when you defeat certain bosses or advance into a new story region. Others remain available only if you complete an early conversation, collect a required item, or finish the first stage of a longer questline.

The tricky part is that not every missable quest needs to be fully completed before its first deadline. Sometimes you only need to accept the quest or finish a specific objective to keep its later stages available.

This guide explains which quests to check before major boss fights, how to avoid losing important rewards, and what you can do if you have already passed a point of no return.

Spoiler warning: This guide names bosses, regions, and side quests throughout the game. It avoids major ending revelations.

Quick Answer: Which Quests Are Missable in Phantom Blade Zero?

The most important early missable-quest checkpoints are:

  • Before Jing Ye, the Outlaw: Complete Apprentice Healer by collecting three medicinal herbs and returning them to Yu'er.
  • Before Bai Chilian: Finish Purge the Sect, Festering Secret, Honor Among Thieves, and A Healer's Mercy. Also deliver the Flesh Lily and accept Secrets of the Baishan Sect.
  • Before leaving Weeping Creek Valley: Complete the first stage of A Severed Mindseal involving the Shadow Warden and Primal Stone.
  • Before entering Pangzhen: Complete the required opening objectives for The Journey Home and Young Master Lan in the Village of Lu.
  • Before Yubi No.21 Swordfighter Puppet: Complete the relevant Secrets of the Baishan Sect interaction after Wu Lengshuang.
  • Before Mirage Estate: Complete the ten required purple Mystery quests if you want the True Ending.

Important: Some deadlines are established quest cutoffs, while others are precautionary checkpoints where the exact failure trigger is less certain. When in doubt, finish the available objective before advancing the story.

Missable Quest Cutoff Table

Use this checklist before defeating a major boss or entering the next region.

Progression checkpoint Quest What to complete
Early Weeping Creek Valley A Severed Mindseal Return the first Primal Stone to the Shadow Warden
Before Jing Ye Apprentice Healer Collect all three herbs and return to Yu'er
Before Bai Chilian Purge the Sect Complete the Old Archer's request
Before Bai Chilian Festering Secret Complete the Outpost investigation
Before Bai Chilian Honor Among Thieves Finish the Tale
Before Bai Chilian A Healer's Mercy Heal all four injured thieves
Before Bai Chilian Flesh Lily Deliver the Flesh Lily to Yu'er
Before Bai Chilian Secrets of the Baishan Sect Accept the quest from Lanlan
Before entering Pangzhen The Journey Home Complete Old Man Gen's opening objectives
Before entering Pangzhen Young Master Lan Complete the early Village of Lu objectives
Before Yubi No.21 Secrets of the Baishan Sect Examine the body after Wu Lengshuang
Before Young Mistress Mu Xiaokui's ribbon Examine the ribbon as a precaution
Before Mirage Estate True Ending Mysteries Complete the ten required purple quests

The most important distinction is between complete before the boss and start before the boss.

For example, Secrets of the Baishan Sect has an early acceptance requirement before Bai Chilian, but its later objectives continue in another region. You must also complete those later steps before their own progression deadlines.

What counts as a point of no return?

A point of no return is a story event that prevents you from completing certain content afterward.

In Phantom Blade Zero, that does not always mean an entire region becomes permanently inaccessible.

You may still be able to return to an area, collect items, or explore previously visited locations. However, the NPC needed for a side quest may no longer offer the same dialogue, or the quest may already be marked as failed.

Returning to a region does not automatically restore a failed Tale.

What If You Already Defeated the Boss?

If you have already passed one of the checkpoints above, check your quest journal before assuming everything is lost.

There are three possibilities:

  1. The quest is still active. Follow its remaining objective and check whether the NPC or required location is accessible.
  2. The quest is marked failed. Look for a manual save from before the boss or story transition.
  3. The quest is missing from your journal. Revisit its starting location if possible and check whether the original interaction is still available.

A blocked route is not necessarily a failed quest. You may simply need a key, a traversal ability, or another story item.

If the quest has permanently failed and you have no earlier save, another playthrough may be necessary.

Before Jing Ye: Apprentice Healer

Apprentice Healer is an early Tale involving Yu'er, a young healer in Weeping Creek Valley.

She needs three medicinal herbs to prepare her medicine.

This is one of the first quests you should complete because its availability can be affected by early story progression.

When should you finish Apprentice Healer?

Complete the quest before defeating Jing Ye, the Outlaw.

For additional safety, finish it before advancing through the Thieves' Camp Crane Bell progression.

The exact failure trigger has been described differently, so there is little benefit in delaying the quest until the last possible moment.

How to complete Apprentice Healer

Speak to Yu'er and collect these three herbs:

  • Blood-Stopper Vine
  • Congealeaf
  • Blemish Goldweed

All three are story items required for the same quest.

Blood-Stopper Vine

Blood-Stopper Vine is found during the early Weeping Creek Valley exploration route.

Look for the herb in the overgrown area near wooden machinery along the route connected to the Axemaster locations.

Its item description identifies it as a medicinal vine whose dark crimson sap helps stop bleeding.

Congealeaf

Congealeaf is found around the Creek Valley Plains section of Weeping Creek Valley.

To reach the relevant area, obtain the Sha-Chi Tower Base Camp Gate Key, which opens the camp gate leading toward the base of Sha-Chi Tower.

If the route appears inaccessible, check whether you have already collected the key rather than assuming the herb is unavailable.

Blemish Goldweed

Blemish Goldweed is found around the Long Pillar Overlook area.

Search the shallow water and nearby rocky banks for the collectible plant.

Once you have all three herbs, return to Yu'er.

Apprentice Healer reward: Medicine Case

Completing Yu'er's request rewards the Medicine Case.

Its effect is:

Increases healing from Medicine by 20%.

This is a useful defensive reward, especially if you rely on healing during difficult boss encounters.

Because the reward comes from completing the Tale, collecting the herbs without returning to Yu'er is not enough.

Can you complete Apprentice Healer after Jing Ye?

Do not rely on being able to finish it afterward.

If you have already defeated Jing Ye, check whether Yu'er remains available and whether the Tale is still active.

If the journal marks it as failed, you may need an earlier save to recover the opportunity.

Before Bai Chilian: Four Missable Tales

Bai Chilian, Lady of the Twin Serpents, is one of the most important quest-related boss checkpoints in Phantom Blade Zero.

Defeating Bai Chilian changes access to several NPC interactions associated with the Outpost and Thieves' Camp.

Before the encounter, finish the following four Tales.

1. Purge the Sect

Purge the Sect involves the Old Archer and his former disciples, who have become bandits.

To complete the Tale:

  1. Speak to the Old Archer.
  2. Accept his request concerning the corrupted disciples.
  3. Find and defeat the required enemies.
  4. Return to the Old Archer.
  5. Complete his remaining dialogue and check the journal.

Do not assume the quest is finished simply because the enemies have been defeated.

The return conversation matters.

2. Festering Secret

Festering Secret begins as an investigation involving the Outpost and a chain-sealed courtyard.

The quest contains multiple stages, including collecting evidence and speaking with the captain.

Step 1: Investigate the chain-sealed courtyard

Locate the courtyard at the Outpost.

The chains blocking the route can be broken using the Dread Axe.

Its Iron Chain Breaker ability allows you to destroy iron chains obstructing paths, even when the weapon is not equipped.

If you cannot open the courtyard, check whether you have acquired the Dread Axe.

Step 2: Continue the Four Axes investigation

Follow the available objectives involving the Four Axes and Gu Lingran.

Inspect the required locations and collect the evidence requested by the quest.

Step 3: Report to the captain

A later objective asks you to show the captain evidence of Gu Lingran's crimes.

Return to the captain and complete the conversation.

Check the journal afterward for any additional objective before considering the Tale finished.

Missable warning: Complete the available Festering Secret investigation before defeating Bai Chilian. Unlocking the courtyard alone does not mean the entire Tale is complete.

3. Honor Among Thieves

Honor Among Thieves is another Tale to finish before Bai Chilian.

Complete its remaining objectives and conversations while the relevant NPC interactions are still available.

If the quest is already active, follow it to completion rather than leaving the final hand-in until after the boss.

4. A Healer's Mercy

A Healer's Mercy involves helping four injured thieves in Crimson Forest.

Check the areas around:

  • Outlaw Trap
  • Cliffside Lodge
  • Thieves' Camp

Make sure you have helped all four injured thieves and completed the quest's available follow-up before fighting Bai Chilian.

Two additional checks before Bai Chilian

The four Tales are not the only objectives worth completing.

Flesh Lily

Obtain the Flesh Lily associated with Hua, Deadly Betrothed, and deliver it to Yu'er.

Complete this hand-in before the Bai Chilian progression cutoff.

Secrets of the Baishan Sect

Speak to Lanlan on the large wooden bridge near Thieves' Camp and accept Secrets of the Baishan Sect.

This is an early-stage requirement. You do not need to finish the entire questline before Bai Chilian, but you must begin it while the interaction is available.

For detailed instructions on these objectives, read our Phantom Blade Zero Bai Chilian: 4 Missable Quests to Finish Before the Boss guide.

A Severed Mindseal: First-Stage Warning

A Severed Mindseal is a longer questline that continues through multiple regions.

However, its opening stage in Weeping Creek Valley should be completed before leaving that part of the story behind.

How to complete the first stage

  1. Travel to the Valley Sha-Chi Tower Summit Bell.
  2. Speak to the friendly Shadow Warden.
  3. Go down the large ladder nearby.
  4. Defeat the enemy carrying the Sha-Chi Tower Furnace Inspection Crank.
  5. Use the crank at the furnace on the tower's first floor.
  6. Obtain the Primal Stone.
  7. Return to the Shadow Warden and hand over the stone.

Afterward, check whether you can retrieve the crank again, as it is used later in the questline.

Do you need to finish the entire quest immediately?

No.

The important precaution is to complete the first Weeping Creek Valley stage.

Later objectives take place in other regions, so do not confuse the first-stage deadline with the completion of the entire quest.

The exact irreversible trigger for skipping the first stage is less clear than the required actions. Finish it before advancing out of the early region.

Before Pangzhen: Village of Lu Quests

Before entering Pangzhen, revisit the Village of Lu and check two important questlines:

  • The Journey Home
  • Young Master Lan

Both have early objectives that should be completed before crossing into the next region.

The Journey Home — Old Man Gen

Speak to Old Man Gen near his hideout Bell in the Village of Lu.

Begin The Journey Home and follow its available objectives.

As you progress through the region, investigate the required location connected to his home and complete the relevant interactions.

After opening the locked route at the end of the Village of Lu, return to Old Man Gen before entering Pangzhen.

This return visit is important because the quest continues later.

Young Master Lan

Speak to Young Master Lan near his hideout Bell and accept the quest.

After opening the locked route at the end of the Village of Lu, return and speak with him again before entering Pangzhen.

Later, the quest continues through Pangzhen and involves the Lan Manor Key.

The important point is that you should not skip the early Village of Lu interactions simply because the full questline continues in another region.

Why these quests are easy to miss

Both quests encourage you to continue into the next area, but they also involve returning to NPCs you have already met.

Before crossing the region boundary, review your journal and check whether either NPC has new dialogue.

Before Yubi No.21 and Young Mistress

Two later progression checks involve interactions that are easy to overlook.

Secrets of the Baishan Sect: Examine the body

Secrets of the Baishan Sect has another important stage in the Mandate Encampment.

After the encounter with Wu Lengshuang, locate and examine the body lying among the flowers along the subsequent route.

Do this before advancing through the Yubi No.21 Swordfighter Puppet encounter.

There is also a separate progression risk involving the Training Grounds boss, so complete the available Baishan objectives before advancing through that part of the region.

Remember: Accepting the quest from Lanlan before Bai Chilian only protects the opening stage. It does not automatically complete the later requirements.

Young Mistress: Examine Mu Xiaokui's ribbon

Before confronting Young Mistress, check for the ribbon associated with Mu Xiaokui.

Examine it while the interaction remains available.

This is a useful precaution for players trying to experience all available boss-related story content.

The exact consequences of skipping the ribbon are less certain than the major Tale cutoffs, so it is best treated as a recommended check rather than a guaranteed permanent quest failure.

Mirage Estate and the True Ending

The Mirage Estate checkpoint is particularly important if you want the True Ending.

Unlike the early missable Tales, this warning concerns a collection of purple Mystery quests that must be completed before a major late-game story transition.

Ten purple Mystery quests to complete

Before entering Mirage Estate, complete:

  • Deep in the Valley
  • Illusion of Inanis
  • Sha-Chi Powered Boat
  • Allure of Vanity
  • Illusory Pipa
  • Pillars of Kunlun
  • Whence the Weeping
  • The Herald's Illusion
  • Crimson Manor
  • Secrets at the Heart of the Lake

These Mysteries are part of the True Ending preparation.

What about Bloodline Awakening?

Bloodline Awakening is a later requirement connected to completing all five Long Pillar challenges.

It is not one of the ten Mysteries that must be finished before entering Mirage Estate.

You should still complete it before proceeding to the final ending sequence if you are pursuing the True Ending.

What does the Last Chance Bell warning mean?

The Last Chance Bell in Mount Soulrend warns you before the final boss sequence.

However, the warning can appear even if you have already completed the necessary True Ending quests.

It is not automatically proof that something is missing.

Use the warning as an opportunity to review your journal, confirm the required objectives, and preserve a manual save.

For the full True Ending route, see our Phantom Blade Zero True Ending: 10 Purple Quests & Mirage Estate Warning guide.

Can You Recover Failed Quests?

Whether you can recover a missed quest depends on its current status and how far you have progressed.

If the quest is still active

Check the journal for the current objective.

Return to the required NPC or location and attempt to continue.

An inaccessible route may indicate that you need another item or ability rather than that the quest has failed.

For example:

  • The Dread Axe can break iron chains blocking the Outpost courtyard.
  • The Sha-Chi Tower Base Camp Gate Key opens the gate leading toward the tower's base.
  • The Hunter's Chain Sickle allows traversal using distant grapple points after it has been obtained, even when unequipped.

These are progression requirements, not automatic signs of a missable quest.

If the journal marks the quest as failed

Look for a manual save from before the relevant boss or story transition.

Loading an earlier save may allow you to finish the objective and preserve the questline.

If no suitable save exists, you may need another playthrough.

Can you recover a quest by returning after the story?

Not necessarily.

Some areas remain explorable after major story events, but returning does not automatically restore NPC dialogue or a Tale that has already failed.

Similarly, postgame exploration should not be treated as a guaranteed way to recover missed quest rewards.

Best way to protect your progress

Before a major boss or region transition:

  1. Create a separate manual save.
  2. Check your active Tales and Mysteries.
  3. Complete outstanding NPC conversations.
  4. Turn in any required quest items.
  5. Confirm whether a quest needs to be finished or merely started.
  6. Keep the earlier save until you have checked the journal after progressing.

What quests fail after Bai Chilian?
The major Tales to finish before Bai Chilian are Purge the Sect, Festering Secret, Honor Among Thieves, and A Healer's Mercy. You should also complete the Flesh Lily hand-in and accept Secrets of the Baishan Sect before the encounter.

Is Festering Secret permanently missable?
Yes, it is one of the Tales associated with the Bai Chilian progression cutoff. Finish the investigation before defeating the boss. If you are stuck at the chain-sealed courtyard, obtain the Dread Axe and use its Iron Chain Breaker ability.

Can I finish Apprentice Healer after defeating Jing Ye?
Do not rely on being able to complete it afterward. Finish the quest before Jing Ye and before advancing through the nearby Crane Bell progression. If you have already moved forward, check Yu'er and your journal to see whether the Tale remains available.

Do I need to complete A Severed Mindseal before leaving Weeping Creek Valley?
Complete its opening stage by obtaining the first Primal Stone and returning it to the Shadow Warden. The quest continues in later regions, so you do not need to finish every stage immediately.

Can I recover a failed side quest without New Game Plus?
An earlier manual save may let you retry the missed objective. If the quest has permanently failed and no suitable save exists, another playthrough may be necessary. Returning to the region alone does not guarantee recovery.

What must I complete before entering Mirage Estate?
Complete the ten required purple Mystery quests for the True Ending route. Bloodline Awakening is a separate later requirement involving five Long Pillar challenges. Keep a manual save before entering Mirage Estate.

Final Thoughts

The safest way to avoid missing side quests in Phantom Blade Zero is to check your journal before every major boss fight and region transition.

Focus on finishing Apprentice Healer before Jing Ye, clearing the important Tales before Bai Chilian, completing the early Village of Lu objectives before Pangzhen, and finishing the required purple Mysteries before Mirage Estate.

Some quests only need an early interaction to remain available, while others must be completed before their deadline. Knowing that difference—and keeping an earlier manual save—can save you from losing valuable rewards or repeating an entire questline.
