Space Marine 2 Chaos Siege Objectives: How Beacon, Altar and Imperial Tasks Work

Chaos Siege in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 isn't simply about surviving one enemy wave after another.

The mode adds objective-focused encounters that can change what your squad needs to prioritize. Depending on the situation, you may need to defend a location or deal with Imperial forces before the encounter can progress.

That makes the active objective just as important as the enemy wave around you.

One particularly important situation involves Imperial forces. They can appear alongside the main Tyranid fighting, and defeating them may be necessary before you can move on to the next stage of the encounter.

If Chaos Siege seems to have stopped progressing, check the active objective before assuming another wave is about to start.

Defend the Beacon

One objective you can encounter in Chaos Siege is Defend the Beacon.

When the beacon becomes the active objective, your priority changes from simply clearing enemies to protecting the marked location.

What to Do

When the beacon objective appears:

  1. Move toward the marked beacon.
  2. Keep the squad close enough to respond to enemies attacking the area.
  3. Focus on threats around the beacon instead of chasing enemies far away.
  4. Watch the objective state before leaving the area.

The important point is that killing enemies isn't necessarily the only thing that matters. The location you're defending becomes the immediate priority while the objective is active.

Don't Chase Every Enemy Away From the Beacon

A large Tyranid group can easily pull players away from the objective.

If the beacon is still active, avoid turning the encounter into a long chase across the map. Whenever possible, let enemies come toward the area you're defending.

This keeps the squad positioned around the objective and makes it easier to respond if the beacon comes under pressure.

How the Altar Objective Works

Chaos Siege can also introduce an altar defense objective.

Like the beacon, the altar gives the squad a specific location to protect instead of simply clearing whatever enemies are nearby.

The objective can therefore change your immediate priorities during a battle. You still need to deal with the surrounding enemies, but the active objective tells you what needs to be accomplished next.

The Altar Can Follow an Imperial Encounter

An altar-defense sequence can come after an encounter involving Imperial forces.

This makes enemy priority especially important.

If your squad continues focusing entirely on the Tyranid swarm while an objective-related Imperial encounter is active, you can spend time fighting enemies that aren't actually preventing progression.

Kill the Imperial Forces Before Moving On

This is one of the most important things to understand about Chaos Siege objectives.

Imperial forces can appear during the Siege as part of an objective encounter. Although the encounter can initially look like a secondary activity, you may need to eliminate the Imperial forces before the encounter can progress.

Don't automatically leave the area once the most obvious group of Loyalists has been defeated.

Check for Stragglers

If the objective isn't progressing, look around the surrounding area for surviving Imperial enemies.

A remaining enemy can be easy to miss during a large Tyranid fight, particularly when the battlefield contains several enemy groups at once.

Before assuming the objective has stopped working, check:

  • The immediate area around the objective.
  • Nearby elevated positions.
  • Enemies that have moved away from the main group.
  • Any remaining Imperial units indicated by the objective.

This is especially useful when your squad has already cleared the main group but the next stage hasn't started.

Don't Treat Imperial Forces as Just Another Wave

The key distinction is objective priority.

If the game is asking you to deal with Imperial forces, don't let the Tyranid swarm completely distract the squad from that task.

You can still defend yourselves against surrounding enemies, but identify what is actually blocking progression and deal with it first.

What to Do When a Chaos Siege Objective Isn't Progressing

If a Chaos Siege objective appears stuck, run through this quick checklist before assuming something has gone wrong.

1. Check the Objective Marker

Look at the active objective and confirm what the game is currently asking you to do.

The next step may not be another standard enemy wave.

2. Return to the Objective Area

If the squad has moved away while fighting, return to the marked location.

This is particularly important for beacon and altar defense objectives.

3. Look for Remaining Imperial Enemies

If Imperial forces are part of the current objective, search the surrounding area for anything you haven't eliminated.

Don't assume that defeating the largest group means the objective is complete.

4. Stop Chasing Unrelated Enemies

Chaos Siege can put a large number of enemies around the squad.

You don't necessarily need to chase every Tyranid across the map while an objective remains active.

5. Recheck the Objective State

Once the required task is complete, check whether the objective has changed before moving on.

This simple habit can prevent unnecessary wandering around the map.

Why These Objectives Matter

The biggest adjustment Chaos Siege objectives create is priority management.

Normal waves naturally encourage you to think:

Kill everything attacking us.

Objective encounters require a different question:

What does the game actually need us to complete right now?

That distinction becomes important when several enemy factions are active at once.

Objectives Change Where You Fight

A defense objective can pull the squad toward a specific location instead of allowing everyone to fight wherever they want.

Enemy Priority Can Change

An Imperial enemy may be more important to progression than a much larger group of Tyranids.

Splitting the Squad Can Waste Time

One player chasing enemies across the map while the rest of the squad defends an objective can make the encounter harder.

Stay aware of the active objective before splitting up.

Objectives Break Up the Wave Rhythm

Chaos Siege isn't simply:

fight → survive → fight → survive.

Objective encounters give the squad reasons to move, defend a location, or change which enemies they prioritize.

How Chaos Siege Objectives Differ From Normal Waves

The easiest way to think about the difference is this:

Normal wave Objective encounter
Survive incoming enemies Complete the active task
Focus on threats Focus on the objective
Hold your position when possible Move or defend a specific location
Kill enemies generally Prioritize enemies blocking progression

The biggest adjustment is learning when not to treat every enemy as the immediate priority.

If you're defending a beacon or altar, protect the location.

If Imperial forces are preventing progression, find and eliminate them.

If the objective changes, follow the new objective instead of continuing the previous task out of habit.

For players working on the new Chaos-focused content, it's also worth separating Chaos Siege gameplay from Chaos Relic Armour progression. How Many Chaos Siege Sectors Are There?

Chaos Siege currently has two sectors.

A third sector is in development, so the current structure isn't necessarily the final version of the mode.

For now, players should expect the live Chaos Siege experience to use the two currently available sectors.
