Upon the completion of the battle, one of your first priorities should be to hit the tab that illuminates every body that can be looted on the battlefield. In case the corpse has a white outline, it indicates that you have already examined it, whereas a yellow outline indicates you haven't searched it yet.
In order to loot all items in WH40K Rogue Trader you simply need to press Alt to Cargo and click COLLECT ALL. All of the items will be sent to your cargo area, which you will utilize to level up your reputation with different factions during the game. So it's a really good idea to collect everything you stumble upon.
In Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader, your storage capacity is essentially infinite. The tab will automatically create a new one as it fills up, and when you engage with a merchant you can sell any tabs to that merchant to level up your reputation with his faction.
Now, hovering over an item will let you to compare it to what you already have before you loot everything to cargo. So when you're running around in the game, you'll want to hold down the tab key a lot. It is a simple method for identifying many objects that you can interact with, but it's not going to identify all of them for you.
Another thing you need to pay attention to is the map. It is probably the best option for you to ensure that you have collected everything in a zone before you leave. So every now and then, while exploring a zone, take your map and search for small icons (storage containers) that you may have missed or seen while exploring the area. There are many of them, and occasionally you'll find some really cool stuff inside. So make sure you open up your map with M and just check.
