Crimson Desert 2.0 Water Stride Guide: How to Unlock & Run Across Water

Updated August 26, 2026

Crimson Desert Enhanced (Version 2.00.00) adds several new abilities to Kliff, but Water Stride is one of the most useful for exploration. It lets Kliff sprint directly across the surface of rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water instead of immediately swimming through them.

The important part is that Water Stride isn't available immediately. You need to meet its skill-tree requirement first.

Here's exactly what you need to unlock it, how to use it, how much Stamina it consumes, and how far you can realistically travel before you have to start swimming.

Quick answer: Water Stride is a new Kliff skill in Crimson Desert 2.0. It requires Double Jump Lv. 2. Once unlocked, hold LShift on PC while on water to sprint across its surface. It costs 10 Stamina per second, so your available Stamina determines how long you can maintain the water sprint.

What Is Water Stride in Crimson Desert 2.0?

Water Stride is one of the eight new skills added to Kliff with the Crimson Desert Enhanced 2.0 update.

Instead of entering a swimming animation whenever you move into deep water, Water Stride allows Kliff to run across the surface of the water while sprinting.

That makes it primarily a movement and exploration ability.

It is particularly useful when you're:

  • Crossing rivers
  • Cutting across lakes
  • Exploring areas separated by water
  • Taking shortcuts instead of following roads
  • Chasing objectives on the opposite side of a body of water
  • Moving quickly through Pywel without immediately swimming

The ability is part of the redesigned 2.0 skill system, which added eight new Kliff skills and introduced new progression requirements for accessing them.

How to Unlock Water Stride

The key requirement is:

  • Double Jump Lv. 2

Once Double Jump reaches Level 2, the Water Stride node becomes available in Kliff's skill progression. You can then select Water Stride and spend the required skill resource to learn it.

Unlock path

  • Double Jump → Level 2 → Water Stride

So if Water Stride is still locked for you, check your Double Jump level before looking for another prerequisite.

Current 2.0 skill information identifies Double Jump Level 2 as the direct prerequisite for Water Stride.

Don't confuse Double Jump with Water Stride

Water Stride is an upgrade connected to the Double Jump branch, but it doesn't replace Double Jump. You still want Double Jump for vertical exploration, aerial movement and other traversal options. Water Stride simply adds another way to use Kliff's movement system.

The important gate is Double Jump Lv. 2. Once the requirement is met and you have the necessary resource to learn the node, Water Stride can be unlocked from the skill tree.

Note: The 10 Stamina per second cost and LShift PC input are confirmed by the Water Stride skill information. Current guides also list A on Xbox and X on PlayStation for activating the ability.

How to Run Across Water With Water Stride

Once you've unlocked the skill, using it is straightforward.

Step 1: Find a body of water

Approach a river, lake or other body of water. You don't need to find a special location to activate Water Stride.

Step 2: Move onto the water

Run toward the water's surface. Once the ability is active, Kliff can remain on top of the water instead of immediately switching into swimming.

Step 3: Hold Sprint

On PC, hold:

  • LShift

Kliff will sprint across the surface.

On controller, the current inputs are:

  • Xbox: Hold A
  • PlayStation: Hold X

Step 4: Keep an eye on your Stamina

This is important. Water Stride isn't an unlimited water-running ability. It consumes 10 Stamina per second, so watch your Stamina bar during longer crossings.

If your Stamina reaches zero, Kliff falls into the water and switches to swimming. That doesn't mean the crossing is automatically over. You can continue through the water using the normal swimming system.

How Far Can Water Stride Take You?

There isn't a simple fixed distance such as "100 meters" or "200 meters."

Your available Stamina determines how long you can maintain Water Stride, which in turn determines how far you can run across the water.

The skill consumes 10 Stamina per second. When that Stamina runs out, Kliff drops into the water and begins swimming.

In simple terms: More available Stamina = longer Water Stride distance.

For example, if you have roughly 100 usable Stamina, the listed 10-Stamina-per-second cost gives you approximately 10 seconds of water sprinting, assuming nothing else changes your Stamina consumption.

That doesn't mean you will always cover exactly the same distance, because your movement and direction can affect how far you travel during those seconds.

What happens when Stamina reaches zero?

Kliff doesn't simply stop moving. Instead:

  • Water Stride → Stamina depleted → Kliff falls into water → Swimming begins

This makes Stamina management particularly important when crossing wide bodies of water.

Should you cross a huge lake with Water Stride?

You can, but check your Stamina first. For a short or medium crossing, Water Stride can get you across before the resource becomes a problem. For a very wide body of water, you may run out of Stamina before reaching the other side and have to finish the journey by swimming. That's still useful because you can cover the first part of the distance much faster.

How Much Stamina Does Water Stride Use?

Water Stride costs 10 Stamina per second.

This is important because the ability isn't a free replacement for swimming. For short crossings, the cost is relatively easy to manage. For longer journeys, however, you should consider your available Stamina before sprinting across the entire distance.

Water Stride vs. Swimming

  • Water Stride: Much faster for crossing water, lets you remain on the surface, uses 10 Stamina per second, excellent for shortcuts and exploration, ends when your available Stamina is exhausted.
  • Swimming: Doesn't require Water Stride, useful when you run out of Stamina while using Water Stride, still useful for longer water crossings, lets you continue after falling from the surface.

The important distinction is that Water Stride has the explicit 10 Stamina-per-second cost. Once that resource is exhausted, Kliff drops into the water and can continue swimming rather than simply being unable to move.

A good approach is to use Water Stride for short and medium crossings, while treating swimming as your fallback for crossings that are too wide to complete before your Water Stride Stamina runs out.

Why Water Stride Is Worth Unlocking

Water Stride isn't simply a novelty skill.

Crimson Desert's world is designed around exploration, and water can otherwise interrupt your movement route.

With Water Stride, a river that previously forced you to:

  • stop → swim → climb out → continue

can become:

  • sprint → cross → keep exploring

That makes the skill particularly attractive if you spend a lot of time exploring away from the main quest.

Best uses for Water Stride

  1. Exploration — This is the biggest reason to unlock it. You can take more direct routes across Pywel.
  2. Quest travel — If a quest marker is on the opposite side of a river, Water Stride can save time.
  3. Open-world shortcuts — You don't always need to follow roads or search for bridges.
  4. Fast movement between locations — For players who spend hours exploring rather than following the main story, the convenience adds up quickly.

Water Stride is also one of the more noticeable additions in the 2.0 skill overhaul because it changes how Kliff physically navigates the world rather than simply improving an existing attack.

Double Jump Is Now Easier to Obtain

There's an important 2.0 change to consider before spending resources on Double Jump.

The update adds Double Jump as a reward from Bilwise during the "Unexpected Gift" quest.

That means you shouldn't automatically spend a valuable skill resource on Double Jump without checking your current progression. If Unexpected Gift is available to you, it may be better to obtain Double Jump through the quest and then work toward Double Jump Lv. 2 for Water Stride.

This is particularly useful for new players trying to conserve their early skill resources. The 2.0 skill-reset changes also make it worthwhile to inspect the new tree before committing resources.

Tip: If Water Stride is your goal, don't stop after unlocking basic Double Jump. You need to reach Double Jump Lv. 2 before Water Stride becomes available.

Water Stride Not Working?

If Kliff keeps falling into the water instead of running across it, check these things first.

  1. Check Double Jump Level — The most important requirement is: Double Jump Lv. 2. Having basic Double Jump isn't enough.
  2. Confirm Water Stride is actually learned — Reaching the prerequisite doesn't automatically mean you have the ability learned. Return to Kliff's skill tree and check the Water Stride node.
  3. Hold Sprint — On PC, the Water Stride input is: LShift. For controllers: Xbox: A | PlayStation: X. Simply walking onto the water won't produce the same result.
  4. Watch your Stamina — Water Stride consumes 10 Stamina per second. If you're attempting a long crossing and run out of Stamina, Kliff will drop into the water and start swimming.
  5. Check your skill-tree progression — The 2.0 update completely redesigned skill progression and introduced Abyss Links. Existing skill progression was reset once when players first launched the updated game, with previously spent resources refunded. If you returned to an existing save after updating, make sure you've rebuilt the required Double Jump progression.

Final Verdict

Water Stride is one of the most useful exploration additions in Crimson Desert 2.0.

The unlock path is simple:

  • Double Jump Lv. 2 → Unlock Water Stride → Hold LShift on water → Sprint across the surface

The important limitation is Stamina. Water Stride costs 10 Stamina per second, meaning the amount of Stamina you have effectively determines how long you can run before dropping into the water. Once the bar is empty, Kliff switches to swimming.

So don't think of Water Stride as unlimited water running. Instead, use it as a fast traversal tool: sprint across shorter crossings, monitor your Stamina on longer routes, and let Kliff swim if you can't reach the opposite shore before the resource runs out.

The key advantage is that running out of Water Stride Stamina doesn't end the crossing. Kliff falls into the water and can continue swimming, giving you a useful fallback rather than forcing you to restart the journey.

And because Water Stride is part of the new 2.0 Kliff skill additions, it's another good reason for returning players to inspect the redesigned skill tree rather than simply rebuilding their old pre-2.0 setup.
