Sony Pictures Animation is teaming up with screenwriters who penned its most successful 3D animation film Smurfs 2011 Jay Sherick and David Ronn to bring us Elzie Crisler Segar’s world renowned fictional character “Popeye” back to the big screen. According to the Sony’s press release the adaptation will be produced by Spider-Man producer Avi Arad.
Popeye the Sailor is one of the most iconic characters in animation industry, a bloke who champions peace and only puts up his dukes when looking to set things right. As a child, the Popeye shorts were my most favorite series of all time. Elzie Crisler Segar, the originator of Thimble Theater and Popeye, is one of the best cartoonists of all times. His skill to weave crazy compelling stories around a cast of the unique and comical was as remarkable as his perception of human nature. His art was second-to-none in it's simple and unique expressiveness.
