Todd Haynes Mildred Pierce on DVD/Blu-ray in January-HBO

HBO and Warner Bros. announced that they will be releasing Todd Haynes adaptation of "Mildred Pierce” on DVD and Blu-ray January 3, 2012. The DVD will be available for the price of $29.98, while the Blu-ray will be available for the price of $39.99 and both discs will contain extra bonus materials such as Audio Commentary, Inside the Episodes, Making of Featurette and Seamless Play BD only.

The newest adaptation of the HBO five-part TV show based on James M. Cain's book was directed by Todd Haynes, and starring Kate Winslet, Guy Pierce, Evan Rachel Wood and Melissa Leo.

The story follows Mildred Pierce (played by Kate Winslet) a depressed woman whose husband Bert Pierce (played by Brian F. O'Byrne) having an affair, when Mildred learns about this she asked him to leave as she has two kids to raise in a 'proper way' and is convinced by her friend Lucy Gessler (played by Melissa Leo) to live her own life. She gets a job as a waitress and quickly gains knowledge of all the in's and out's of the restaurant business and opens her own. As she rejoices her achievement in readying her restaurant she meets a handsome rich customer named Monty Beragon (played by Guy Pearce) and following a spontaneous visit to Santa Barbara she comes back very delighted only to discover her younger child Ray is hospitalized

The book was first adapted in 1945, which stands as one of the finest adaptations of film noir ever produced. The reason for this remake is that the original film was not very true adaptation of the book, so in some senses, the novel itself never did get to the big screen. That being said, one cannot help but weigh against the first adaptation with the newest one. There are some difficulties doing this, since the first adaptation was done in the film noir fashion and the latest one does not take on those conventions.
