Having been based in Jakarta, writer-director Gareth Evans wanted to bring Indonesian martial arts into the world of cinema and he did just that in the movie "Merantau" working with martial artist Iko Uwais. While the film showed promise, it was plagued with a corny story-line and some serious pace issues.
So, Gareth and Iko worked together for an even better film known as "The Raid" in 2011 with a low budget. The film tells the story of an Indonesian SWAT group that lays siege on a building various low lives and criminals. The story progress as the SWAT group go floor by floor battling it out with their rivals.
The film was a critical and commercial success grossing nearly $15 million in worldwide box office on a budget of $ 1.1 million making it Gareth’s highest grossing film to that point.
Now, Gareth Evans has teamed up with Iko Uwais once again for the sequel to 'The Raid', simply titled, Berandal or The Raid 2: Berandal. Iko Uwais will be reprising his role as Rama. In addition to Iko, the international stars such as Julie Estelle, Tio Pakusadewo and Putra Arifin Scheunamann will also staring in the film.
The story beings right where the first one ends, Berandal follows Rama as he goes undercover and infiltrates the ranks of a brutal Jakarta crime organization in order to protect his family and reveal the corruption in his own police force.
Berandal is currently filming in Jakarta and expected to release in theaters sometime in 2014.
