We tested the Android L - check first impressions of the new system

The Android L was announced last Wednesday (25), which debuted a completely new design, called Material. With the promise of improving the experience of all the system apps, the new standard will also be adopted in watches, on TV and in the car. If you're curious to know how it really works, no need to wait until the release of the download in the second half. We've tested on a Nexus 5 and bring our first impressions. Check!

1. Lock screen
The first interaction with the smartphone user is different. The lock screen notifications gained direct, as well as in iOS, which can be opened with two rings. There is also an extra link, in addition to camera movement accessed with a drag to the left, the dialer can be opened from the opposite side.

The center ring of Android is no more pure, like the shortcut at the bottom to access the Google Now To unlock, simply make a move up - lock if any PIN, password or pattern, it is shown that time. The general aspect of the lockscreen is definitely cleaner.

2. Notifications
The notifications have changed a lot. Now there is one more curtain occupying the whole screen, but a short list with the cascading effect of depth of Material Design - seems that items are placed on the screen. If notifications, they are organized into small queued cards, which can be deleted with a sideways movement. At least in the preview version for developers, there is a button to delete all of them at once.

Shortcuts quick sets are also quite different. In the same notification window, a trawler down more shows eight items: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth featured more (important for those who have wearables), and data, Airplane mode, notifications (sound settings), screen rotation, location and Transmit the screen (for Chromecast).

Above, a bar of brightness change is arranged in two small buttons. One leads to the user profile and settings to another, which was also redesigned and now has a search button at the top.

3. Multitasking
Another big change is the Android L thumbnails of open apps. Now centralized and cascaded, they can be closed to both lateral movements as the "X" on top of the windows. The promise is that internal activities of apps as tabs Google Chrome, are on separate cards, but in the preview it still does not happen.

4. "Do Not Disturb"
Android also has a function "Do Not Disturb", similar to iOS and to a resource app Assist smartphone from Motorola . The idea is that, at the touch of a button, the user can disable all sounds of the device for pre-determined time. One of the bugs is Preview this novelty, it is not yet able to completely shut certain sounds at the set time.

5. Saver Battery
Part of the Volta Project, which aims to make Android more efficient energy, the Battery Saver native system is activated automatically when the battery reaches 15%, or when desired by the user. We could not even test the efficiency of the resource, but the result is promising - the Nexus 5 came at dawn with 8% battery and woke up at 7am even with 5% in sleep mode and the screen turned off.

6. Keyboard
The keyboard has been completely redesigned. The appearance is now Bluish without divisions between letters. At first glance, there is the impression that is easier to confuse the keys to interact, but doubt end up with little time to use - everything is as efficient as before in the pure Android.

The point is now to the right of the space button in place of the microphone icon - but the voice input still seems to exist, not only in the Preview version. The answer goes so fast, Swype still pretty effective. In practice, only the appearance became more modern, without major changes in functionality.

7. Dialer
This is one of the few completely redesigned apps. The screen has the most used contacts, the last call just below the search field and lower to access the keyboard. As in the pure Android 4.1, recent calls and the full schedule are accessed movements sideways, and not by means of buttons.

The call screen is also different. With a clear, predominantly blue and white palette, the design also changed the layout of the keyboard buttons, speakerphone, mute, call waiting and adding, we are now at the top, just above the contact picture.

8. Animations, navigation buttons, updated apps
The animations are almost all different. Open apps appear from below the screen, remembering the cards Google Now, give feedback and buttons with a wavy animation, usually also changing the color of the element. Overall, everything seems lighter and more fluid.

The navigation buttons are also changed, with geometric shapes. Triangle back to square for recent apps and a circle to go to the home screen.

So far, there are few apps updated with Material Design, like Google+ , Calculator, Settings and Dialer. Neither Chrome or Gmail suffered modifications yet. Another change is that we realize the absence of the Gallery app, giving rise once the Google Photos to organize media phone and backup in the cloud.

Much still must change with time, until the release of the update in the second half. Judging by the preview, Android 4.5 or 5.0 should be the most elegant and well designed version already launched the system. The question is how many users will indeed receive the update and have the opportunity to enjoy its new features.
