Yakuza 0 (PS4) beginner's guide and tips

In Japan, Yakuza Zero has been on the market since 2015, and now the Western fans of the Yakuza series can finally play the prequel. The action-adventure game takes place in the open world with some limitations. The focus is on exploration, character development and especially combat. In this quick guide, we will show you how to play and what to do on the streets of Kamurocho in control of Kazuma Kiryu.

Basic Controls

Basic controls are not difficult. The joystick levers move Kazuma and the camera and it's possible to walk around freely, at least until we hit a barrier. Pressing X is possible to make the character run faster, but be careful as he can get exhausted.

After exhausted, Kazuma takes a short break before he can run again. It is good to be aware of your health.

Save progress

It may seem obvious, but it is not. Yakuza 0 does not save your progress automatically, like most modern games. Maybe this is done to simulate an "Old Game", since the game takes place in 1988.

However, the tip is to pay attention to the public telephones scattered across the map. They are flagged with a small "S" and can save the player's progress at any time.

Item box

It is also on public phones that the player can rearrange their items. Kazuma has a limited amount of pockets and so cannot carry many items at the same time as the space ends.

To deposit or redeem items, go to a phone booth and choose the Item Box option, so you can deposit what you don’t want to use or what you don’t actually use for some reason. But still, even the Item Box has limited space.

Map

By pressing the touch panel of the PS4 control the player has access to the game map. Stay tuned for mission markers and colorful locations, which indicate Kazuma's stores, points of fun and interest.

The points marked "S" are phone booths, as explained above. In addition, the maps also show names of the streets or neighborhoods, useful to carry out missions that request certain areas.

Stores

Stores are of utmost importance in Yakuza 0. Kazuma doesn’t usually win items by winning battles, only money. In stores you can buy items to regain energy, eat to improve his status and more.

The stores are scattered around the map and are usually marked in yellow. Each one varies according to what is proposed, so it is good to always come in to check what it is about and see what it has to offer.

My Account

One must also entertain Kazuma at one time or another. After so many battles, the character may need some entertainment.

Fun activities are often scattered across the map and marked with pink. Just go in and choose what you want to do, whether it's singing, playing, just talking, drinking a little, among everything that's available.

Fights

Combat is the high point of Yakuza 0. Kazuma has complete freedom to punch and kick his opponents with the combination of buttons like triangle and ball to mount combos in real time.

You can even defend yourself with R2 or dodge by pressing X at the right time. The game has fast combat, so be careful not to be hit by enemies in an unexpected way.

Fight Styles

Kazuma can range in real-time fighting style within battles. Each one has its own characteristics, like faster, slower but powerful and even one focused on special combos.

To toggle the style press one of the directions on the control's digital directional. Kazuma will make a brief pause for the move, so do this away from the enemies and without the risk of being hit by a blow or combo of the opponents while the change is made.

Evolution

The evolution of the character is of extreme importance to remain strong in the fighting. The evolution is paid with money obtained in the fights, under the "Abilities" option in the menu that opens when you press the Options button.

There is a skill tree for each of Kazuma's already unlocked fighting styles. Make your evolution in a quiet way by choosing the cheapest options so that the character doesn’t run out of money so he can buy more benefits later.
