If you haven't observed, there's quite a big vampire vogue going on presently in the film industry, thus you can't really criticize Johnny Depp or the director Tim Burton for their try at joining in the fun. I was first introduced to the work of Tim when I saw the adaptation of Batman. Since then, I have seen other films that were directed by him and learned that he has a unique style of his own. His films are a bit weird and creative and that might be why he and Johnny have worked together several times. They both take many chances when it comes to film making and are taking another one with the Dark Shadows.
The film set in the 1700's, follows the story of Barnabas Collins (played by Johnny Depp) who makes the mistake of hurting a witch. She curses him by transforms him into a vampire and locks him for two centuries. Fast forward to 1972 and Collins is released from his curse. He returns home to return it to its past fame and fix the family business. When the witch returns and terrorizes his family, Collins should take action and look for payback on the witch who cursed him.
Regardless of having vampires and witches, it is not a horror flick. It's a comedy for the majority and it's executed in a remarkable manner. A great part of the comedy itself centers on the dynamic between Collins and his experiences in this unfamiliar world of 1972.
The actors on the whole are great in the movie, but there is clearly only one actor. Johnny Depp is undoubtedly the most outstanding star in the movie. He's already proven to be a star with a wide range of talents. He undertakes roles that won't ever let him to be stereotype. In Dark Shadows, he does over again while putting on an excellence performance and bringing light to the dark world that Tim has created.
